Some friends mentioned planning a vacation. Asked if we wanted to come along. And it gave me vertigo."shouldn't we be doing... something else?""what do you mean?"Apparently not everyone is living with uncertainty at the moment. I am thinking what if we need every spare penny we have to move, or mitigate some disaster? Or to try to help people doing the same?I tried to articulate this in a reasonable way. "You can't stop living because of an election."IDK. I think I may well.

@futurebird That's not unreasonable to consider politics considering one possible future is food may be expensive if the workers that produce it are deported. And people are promising to do that. It's a gamble to guess what will happen.

@futurebird if your source on the of income relies on the government being prudent right now is a good thing. My husband is trying to find a non government job right now, as he works for the feds and will probably be outsourced. We've opted against any vacations. But it is very hard day to day not be "life goes on."

@futurebird It’s difficult to bring up. This could become a very bad situation fast, but few people really entertain that notion. This is all out of our control, and if the higher ups don’t actually start taking Trump on it’s going to be very very bad.

@futurebird Well, I get the impression acting like things actually stay bad even when you grow bored of them is a minority position. It's probably related to how we ended up in a polycrisis.

@futurebird Might not be a bad idea to convert some currency into Euros. Dollars might not be good enough at some point.I don’t want to be driven out because this is my home. But I’m still renewing my passport.

@Rural_Canadian @justafrog Being targeted directly is a horrible fate, but I also always thought it was a bad fate (not anything close, naturally) to be someone who went on with life as normal as it happened around you. But, I'm starting to better understand the compartmentalization. How it's possible. How a society can do these things. It's no one you know. There is nothing obvious you can do.You'll just get yourself hurt. Can't stop living your life after all, right?

@futurebird I keep feeling the same way. Especially in the face of Black Friday promotions. They feel even more empty, like papering over windows to ignore the storm taking shape outside. I’ve been joking about my “nesting” instincts lately. I’m rushing to get every project “set” so that I’m just … ready. And my instinct is to tighten down and save.

@futurebird One large cause of it is that people never wanted to admit what America was *before* Trump. "He'll build camps": well America has camps built already all over the place, built by every politician Democratic or GOP. When people momentarily thought "kids in cages" were bad during Trump's first term, they were looking at pictures of kids taken during Obama's.1/2@Rural_Canadian @justafrog

@futurebird If you were born in America into a suspect class so you can never forget what America is, maybe this doesn't seem so different. If you're not, it's denial time with "maybe something will happen so it'll all be over and we'll be back [to an America that never existed.]"

@richpuchalsky I don't know. Scale matters. Impunity matters. I don't find it comforting to note that democrats have done similar things on smaller scales and also done their best to distance themselves from such things. It is better to deal with those, for example racist and aware than it is bad and concerned that not too many people catch on than it is to deal with people who don't care. The scale of harm can differ by orders of magnitude.

@futurebird What everyone says about American politics is "it could be worse". Yes, anyone can imagine a situation that is worse than the current one. "similar things on smaller scales" though?America has more people in prison than anywhere else in the world. Remember "Trump's a felon!" An entire 8% of the adults in America are felons. Many can't vote, but their families can. America has created an entire voting bloc of people who rightfully hate the system as it is.

@futurebird I won't, but someone has to say this stuff out loud. I'm sure that you could equally well. There was a whole lot of stuff happening around the election and now that's over. And yes, I'm not surprised that people who wanted the election to "work" are trying to go back to normality now that it didn't work.

@futurebird I feel this dichotomy strongly too. A turbo version of the pandemic denial dichotomy. Could that have primed us for this utter intellectual inertia?I warily eyeball the tatters of my “five-year plan” while ruminating on 1933. Meanwhile, renewing travel documents, and oscillating between whether I should already understand I’m just being paranoid, or should already understand that I’m not nearly worried enough

@angelastella IDK if it will come to that. If I had some very clear Other Action I wanted help with and they refused? Well that might be it. But I'm not there yet. And I don't see them saying "no" if I could be more concrete. People deal with uncertantantiy in different ways.

@futurebird I am aging and dealing with chronic mental and physical health issues. If they axe the affordable care act, privatize medicare, raise the retirement age, and cut social security like I think they are going to do, I'm screwed.

@futurebird First, there's nowhere safe to flee to. I don't know why anyone thinks there is. Putin has Africa at his command and he is at Europe's back door with thousands of N. Korean troops. Second- I mean this in the most loving way: mind your own business. Take care of yourself and your family. Don't worry about other people right now. It's a mad world. My kid needs me more than anyone else. Gotta do what _you_ need. Staycation if it feels right. 💛 Care, but don't go nuts.

@futurebird I despise the insistence so many people place on normalizing everything. "You can't stop living because of covid" literally killed millions. "You can't stop living because of global warming" has also been a fine enabler, doing the work of billionaires for them. Reacting to a disaster is a good and necessary thing.

@futurebird I feel this.I was texting with a very close friend for the first time since the election, expressing how upsetting the results were for me, and his response was along the same lines: "Buddhists say enjoy what there is to enjoy and suffer what there is to suffer."I don't think I'm wired like that.He is spending 3 weeks in December riding motorcycles in Baja.
