Eventually they caved and we made it to the moon* or at least made ridiculous leaps in technology that today's rockets are built upon. We had less ideological "management" in place at the time because we were pre hart-cellar and had enough of a monoculture with an ideological enemy in the USSR. Today, such a person couldn't exist so a manager is the face of space. This is annoying like all managerial aspects of pig American system but I still like rockets. If Elon disappeared, we'd likely have no more rockets for a while.

People get into power mostly through making low level blackmail deals that get progressively harsher as they climb higher, to the point where if you want to push back against anything you'll be burnt. Matt Gaetz is a very recent example of that.
