In the past day I've gotten 3 wrong number texts. "Hey Annie meet me at the shooting range""Is this Jane's number this is Bob?"That type of thing. Normally I respond, but getting three is... ODD.

@futurebird Not odd at all, unfortunately. I get a ton of them. It's a scam. In many cases the wrong-text person will try to strike up a conversation. If they happen to catch a lonely person, they'll gain enough confidence to scam them. They send out thousands of these and only need to catch a few fish.

@futurebird Not that odd. It's part of a "pig butchering" scam.Basically, pretend to miss-dial someone, then try to get friendly, then eventually scam the person for all their money in one of a dozen ways.Either ignore them or give them the other people's numbers.

@futurebird I got "Are you Steven? I'm Kelly. Not sure this is the right number."I've had this number for 25 years.

@futurebird Often these are pig butchering scams. However, plain ol' wrong numbers still happen.Years ago I was getting random texts from someone who was *positive* I was her coworker and refused to believe I was not. She kept texting me for a couple weeks, including angrily telling me I was late for my shift.

@gemini6ice @futurebird scam was my first thought as well. I had an odd one once from someone claiming a fairly common name and that they were at LAX on their work phone, and it didn't occur to me until I'd said they had the wrong number that I do actually have a friend named that, because I'd never expect her to use her given name with me because I've always known her by a nickname. So I called the friend like "you didn't just text me from an unfamiliar number, right?" and she hadn't. My guess would be that it was a short con along the lines of: mark assumes it's a person they know with the common name, sob story about lost wallet and dwindling phone battery, cabbie wants the fare paid in Google play gift cards

@futurebird I made the mistake of interacting with one of those and received “wrong number” texts ever since.

@futurebird never reply. Best case your phone is recorded as an active line and resold to other scammers.
