Boost this toot if you're planning on sticking around Mastodon whether or not it's more popular than Bluesky.

@JesseSkinner Mastodon is great, but to make it even better for professional use it might help if something like the "top-links" in the "catch-up" (Beta) window of #phanpy (https://phanpy.social/ ) is the home page by default for all users. These top-links are sorted by the number of times boosted by the ones *you follow*. This could be useful for #science, to highlight most important developments (e.g. publications) in your network. Now you easily miss them, causing some colleagues to leave.

@geertaarts> Mastodon is great, but to make it even better for professional useUsing Mastodon is only one way to participate in the fediverse. It wasn't even the first. There have always been a range of apps you can use, many of which have features Mastodon lacks;https://fediverse.party/en/miscellaneous/Existing professional tools can be modified to communicate over ActivityPub too, see;https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/alphaxiv-and-fediverse/4750@JesseSkinner

@JesseSkinner That occasionally tweaks my old anti-chain letter instincts, but that isn't a thing I'm seeing enough to bother me. There's a repetitiveness that starts to get to me after a while even when they're points of view I agree with. Good tagging can help make that manageable through filters but I'm seeing a lot more untagged repetition than I used to.

@maccruiskeen @JesseSkinner OK, also social. Let's say you follow 200 others, and you stick to them, because you like their messages. Let's say 100 of them post/boost 5 messages per day. That is 500 messages in your timeline/day. A more silent friend or colleague posts one message per month, which might be quite important for both the sender and receiver. It is quickly snowed under. Many of my colleagues joined about a year ago, but most left to LinkedIn and Bluesky now. I think because of this

@geertaarts @maccruiskeen @JesseSkinner I supportIn #Mastodon there's a phobia about algorithms, because of how they're used in other platforms: to collect data to promote ads and also to modify the experience of othersBut a simple algorithm that counts how many times posts were boosted by the people you follow and puts them in a "most popular" feed, it doesn't influence others and uses only data that you already have in your home feedIt just save time to find the more interesting posts

@elCelio @geertaarts @maccruiskeen The key here, too, is that these algorithms are absolutely possible but they live in the client. So users can customize or choose the algorithm that they want, not have one forced down their throats...

@JesseSkinner @geertaarts @maccruiskeen of course. but my instance is already a client to the fediverse.and my instance has a "live feed" feature, where posts are shown in chronological order, and an "explore" feature where there is an algorithm that shows "newer posts with more boosts and favourites are ranked higher"I already have as my "Home" a feature analogous to the "live feed".I think it would be nice to have a feature analogous to the "explore" (but with a known algorithm).

@JesseSkinner I'm doing both. I appreciate how BlueSky is right now and it costs nothing for me to post simultaneously on both platforms. All the comic book stuff I follow is over there, though, so I have to find it somewhere.

@JesseSkinner I have a feeling that Bluesky will eventually end up like X at some point because corporate interests always pollute cool things. Fediverse and Mastodon are where I prefer to be, as I find more interesting posts without an algorithm. The posts I would find with an algorithm didn't really appeal to me, but they were vomited onto my feed in the hopes of getting me to browse for hours. A big swing and a miss, clearly, since I spend most of my time on Lemmy or Mastodon.

@JesseSkinner I tried bluesky. It was fun because there were some authors I liked, but for the most part I was anxious about it turning into Twitter. And I haven't heard anything to convince me it won't.

@JesseSkinner I will never join Bluesky. It's more of the same crap as twitter. And trading one corporate overlord for another is not an act of resistance: the site is actively suppressing Palestinians and pro-Palestinian speech, for example. It's also chock full of the most utterly insufferable liberals (see my pinned tweets 😁).I'm still on twitter for now. I'm quite literally an obnoxious proselytiser for Mastodon there. No one seems to want to hear it. But I don't care 😁

@JesseSkinner mastodon is pretty much everything I want in a social network. Maybe if there were more Model Railroaders it would be absolutely perfect. Otherwise as long as the vintage Mac community is here there’s no reason to leave.

@michaelcoyote @JesseSkinner I think keeping Mastodon as a main account and also building a community on BS that could be ported here if the enshitification of BS hits, might not be an awful idea. it might also be a way to educate people about the fediverse. #Mastodon #BlueSky

(1/2)@Bam> I just wish the bridge operated by opt out rather than opt inAFAIK it was. Then the Mastodon Homeowners Association dogpiled @snarfed.org until he made it opt-in. What I'd like to see him do is make the opt-in itself opt-in. So it's up to server admins to decide whether they want BS interop with their server to be opt-in or opt-out.I suspect our server's community would prefer opt-out.@gimulnautti @JesseSkinner

(2/2)Having said that, there's some benefits to people effectively having to choose either;* actually decentralised social networks like the fediverse (or Nostr)OR* pseudo-decentralised social platforms like BSIt spares us having to deal with "influencer" types who think volume of noise is more important than quality of signal.
