People who think for-profit healthcare is a good thing don't know the history of firefighting. They used to charge to put your house out when it was on fire, and recognizing the perverse incentive it was eventually made a public service. Healthcare is the same shit

@fcktheworld587 I didn't know that. There are so many people that just aren't aware that universal healthcare is even possible in the US. They parrot the, "It's too expensive" line they've been fed. A relative told me that crap before the election when we were having a discussion. I simply asked, "Why is it too expensive, can you explain the economics of it?" I did it very nicely. Then when she said she couldn't explain it, I very loudly said, "Then shut the fuck up."

@fcktheworld587 Nixon is the one who allowed healthcare for profit in the US.

@fcktheworld587 when I was studying in Australia, I really really missed the private healthcare we have in Thailand. Private hospitals have no wait times, and excellent medical facilities. My relative had to go to the hospital for period pain in Australia, something quite routine to do in Thailand. She was directed to the emergency room where she waited for 4 hours without getting any help, and ended up going home because the pain subsided. It may be more nuanced than just private healthcare?

@mishari I mean, if the pain subsided on it's own, it's probably best that she left without seeing anyone in the end. I like the idea of short wait times, but they're only short because of all of the people who can't access the treatments they need :)

@fcktheworld587 I would disagree with the first statement, but that's not important here.We have a hybrid system where the state pays a sum for each registered individual to private hospitals who then try to reduce their costs and operational load to remain sustainable. There are also for profit arms of public hospitals with less crowded facilities that pays for the others, but wait time for specialists is still in months.
