I don’t know, I start to realize it’s dumb to be so strict about some more, like, centralized or commercialized platforms, discord is a good example. (also add bluesky to the bucket), like the spyware.neocities.org kind of opinions.I am saying this because I was there in my FSF/RMS boot licking prime and don’t anymore and now I look back at that and I’m cringing lol.I don’t really know how to express this guh, but due to the world and system we currently live in such platforms are going to get more polished (even if scuffed in their own way) and more attention compared to half assed less ethically risky counterparts. And doing one like the former is fine, that’s the conditions under which these people are and want to build something. The way Discord operates is a sort of compromise in my eyes, one that seems to work, again, in the current system we are in (let’s not pretend we already live in another more ideal system where fair, decentralized, open source, which secures privacy has the most odds to fully thrive and get all the love. I wish we did, we don’t. (actually I think this is one of the key points of this post actually)).Either way, in the context of this dirty game things like Discord are playing pretty fair, they profit off VC money, they do heavy advertising but only of their own service (nitro) and not showing 3rd party ads (except partnerships sometimes if you count that), yes it is scary they hold so much data but they never provably sold messages to 3rd parties or whack things like that. Is it scary that they technically can? yes. but also if they get found out with it they will face a bunch of public backlash, they have at least some consequences if they did and I think they know it. And I feel like spyware paranoids don’t really think about these nuances. Yes it’s all an can-crumble-at-any-time mess but, like, many things in our current system are and have been somehow holding for a while and me saying that doesn’t mean I think it’s good but yeah here we are… I think we shouldn’t be so scared or angry of Discord or Bluesky or the like.Continuing to fight for something better is worth it but being so (objectively) averse to these less ideal things is not, me feels like.

Would I be surprised when Discord collapses? no.Will I go with a smug face like “haha loooooseeeers I told ya!”? also no lol, I don’t care. I’m using it while it lasts sure, as an end user, and it is what it is

@cheri I used to care so much, but now it's just dull anger and despondence. It's all so tiresome. I've got my island and nobody can take that from me but people will just keep moving from garbage heap to garbage heap and nothing will ultimately change

This is why also I feel like the some are overreacting to the Twitter to Bluesky migration like it’s a crime to go to Bluesky. No it’s fine, it’s whatever

also I think one thing I wanted to portray and I didn’t is if the underlying system doesn’t change the way the most used platforms are won’t change either. Don’t expect for FOSS protocols, project, apps (in the context of connecting to servers) to become the most used thing of their nature without crushing capitalism first

Discord or whatever will come in the future will never ever be dethroned by an open, privacy respecting, decentralized and etc platform until the curent system is crushed, so don’t get many hopes for that
