I just updated the Small Technology Foundation funding page to use Ethereum instead of Nano as the cryptocurrency option since Ethereum is now proof-of-stake instead of the planet-destroying proof-of-work (hello, Bitcoin and co.) and because Nano is apparently a pain to obtain (had a few folks complain). So if you want to donate anonymously, this should make it easier to do so.Your donations do help. So thank you! :)https://small-tech.org/fund-us/đź’•#SmallTechnologyFoundation #SmallTech #SmallWeb

@aral Isnt all crypto bad though? Sure, proof of stake is better, but isnt it waste of energy as well?

@vegafjord @aral ethereum scamcoins?proof of stake is literally plutocracy.prof of stake means everyone who is already rich gets freshly printed money.distribution is concentrated and core folks ate firk believer in Futacracy, including Vitalik Buterin who said this is his religion.Countless people were and are still being scammed. It is a shadow government authoritarian structure with large companies like microsoft and investors like peter thiel in their core.Consensys is a core org

@vegafjord @aral ...and working actively towards a network state.it creates scammers on all fronts.you spit on bitcoin, but distribution is much better. energy prices empower mainly leveraging more solar ...and payments are cheaper and scale better with lightning.also - it does not include a money printer for the rich.

@serapath @vegafjord How much money did who offer, dude? You must be mistaking me with someone people offer money to. Do you know what we do? Do you understand that NOBODY pays for it? We scrape by because Laura works at Penpot and because I sold two houses to work on what we work on. What changed is what I said: they moved from proof of work (proof of waste) to proof of stake. Digital currency != bad. (1/3)

Which is why I implemented Nano initially. But yes, the libertarian ideals behind them are shit. Is traditional banking better. Is Stipe just the most ethical thing ever? Would you rather we simply didn’t exist? Because apparently we need this money shit to keep a roof over our heads and eat. But don’t worry, given we don’t receive enough in donations to exist as it is and we haven’t gotten a single euro of EU funding, you might get your wish. Actually, fuck this. (2/3)

@vegafjord @aral VISA, MasterCard, PayPal etc. also use a lot of energy. For example installing an ad blocker probably saves more energy than not using Ethereum.

@aral not to mention, this might be the only way to donate for many of us in banana republics that restrict any "foreign" transactions... especially to nonprofits and movements. Crypto is literally the only way to survive 100â„…+ inflation on common grocery items, too.

@aral Imo proof-of-work is the only mechanism that works for having consensus without trust.

@sebastian I couldn’t care less if the price is burning down the planet. Proof of work = proof of waste. It’s also a very bleak view of the world to think perfection is achieved when we no longer have to trust anyone. And, finally, even that breaks down when you consider that it’s open to 51% attacks and the consolidation of mining power. That planet-destroying Bitcoin? Runs on trust 100% that the miners who could 51% the system won’t because it’s against their interests. 🤷‍♂️

@aral Just FYI , calling PoW systems “planet destroyers” in 2024 is science denial. The scientific consensus isn’t in support of this 10 out of the last 11 papers on Bitcoin mining show clear environmental benefits. If you want to keep maintaining that Bitcoin is bad for the environment despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, you should know that the scientific consensus does not support your position.

@aral Hmm where did I say that the whole world needs a trustless view? When I look for local goods and services, I’m a trust guy cause the other one will have skin in the game. But on more global issues, I look for trustless solutions. Banks are a good example, where trust is used for misleading you. And they have 0 skin in the game. And don’t let me start about inflation and how central banks are stealing your wealth. Yes, fiat money is broken in many ways.

@hans Not really. I’m really not excited by cryptocurrencies. The only reason I implemented the option on the funding page is to show that we’re not opposed to the idea of a digital currency as long as it doesn’t destroy the planet in the process. But I also can’t get excited about it or about money in general. (Which likely explains why we have so little of it.) :)

Umm, so I just checked the Ethereum wallet, not expecting anything, really (since we basically got next to nothing via Nano for the whole time we had it on) and… goodness… thank you so much… this is going to have a direct effect on helping me speed up dev. It really means a lot and I wasn’t expecting it at all.:kitten:💕

@chris Yeah, it was just more effort than it was worth and no one was using it. Strong agree on BTC and anything that’s proof of work (proof of waste). No, thank you :)
