The collective noun for ants is "colony" which wasn't very excited so I searched for other answers. I found an AI generated article which suggested "nest" "swarm" and..."bike"A bike of ants? What hath the garbage machine hallucinated now? ... thing is... I kinda like it. Like if you had enough ants you'd have a larger and more useful machine. A bike of ants invaded my kitchen! The peddled away with everything!

Most of the "collective nouns" for groups of animals are just made up by silly 19th century list makers from what I can tell. So if I want to talk about bikes of ants... no one can stop me.

@futurebird I've heard there is a group of scientists lobbying to change the collective noun for squid from "school" to "squad".

@futurebird Honestly, you know more about ants than anyone else I've ever known. You could have just started using it, and I would assume it was correct.

@futurebird I think I found the source of the madness.Did this searchhttps://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22bike+of+ants%22&t=lm&df=1990-11-16..2020-11-17&ia=webWhich had exactly one resulthttps://www.encyclopedia.com/literature-and-arts/language-linguistics-and-literary-terms/english-vocabulary-d/bikeWhere ants are an example of a thing that swarms.

@futurebird Yeah they were made up by the nobility & they'd learn them to show off their nobility credentials (nob-cred?) while out hunting & fishing or whetever, so most of them are animals you'd see in the wild.

@futurebird Really, though, we should consider using "ant" as a mass noun.

@futurebird Why not hill? For applicable species, of course.
