Considering Bluesky? Please bear in mind that #Bluesky is:—Funded by #BlockchainCapital:• co-founded by Steve Bannon pal Brock Pierce, a major crypto advocate, and close friend of Eric Adams• run in part by Kirill Dorofeev, who also works for #VK, Russia’s state social network.—A venture-funded startup, so once they need to monetize they're likely to turn to an exploitative business model.Sources: @davetroy, @thenexusofprivacy

@ASegar The sad thing is that in a year or two (or whenever), when this thing collapses, these users will simply go to the next new corporate social network. They'll never learn the hard lesson that an open and community run web is actually important, despite some perceived downsides.

It depends. If the fedierse continues not to address its key problems, then yes, that what will happen again in a year or two. Time will tell.In the short term, people are looking for a Twitter alternative, and for most people Bluesky's a lot better for that than Mastodon or any ActrivityPub based software. And what are the other options, Threads? Sure, Bluesky is likely to become exploitative and turn evil, but Meta's been doing that at scale for a decade already. So I generally see Bluesky -- despite all the very real problems -- as a very good thing in the short term. I just finished updating https://privacy.thenexus.today/bluesky-atmosphere-fediverse/ , which goes into a lot more detail on my perspectives.@collectifission @ASegar

@thenexusofprivacy Back in 2007 when Twitter introduced private messages, the only way to do that was to start a post with 'd' (or so I'm told, I wasn't on there at the time). Yet, it already had millions of users.Compared to that, modern day Mastodon is actually pretty amazing. The wider fediverse is pretty great. Things can always be better and we should strive for continued improvement of UX, but I think this perception that Mastodon is somehow uniquely difficult to use is a bit inflated.
