       @hn50 If the Tesla's vehicles are in fact as safe as they are recognized as being, then perhaps their unusually high fatality rates can be attributed to self-selection of inherently-bad drivers buying them.

       5.6 death per BILLION miles driven.  I've probably driven close to a million miles in my life.  And that's as opposed to 5.5 for Kia, not a huge outlier. However it is NOT the highest, Corvette is 13.6 deaths per billion miles, about 2-1/2 times that of Tesla.  I do think when you're comparing death rates you need to compare similar performance to be reasonable because it is certainly easier to kill yourself at 140 than at 50.
