Japan is famous for their traditional crafts. This didn't happen magically the government designated traditional crafts in each of the 47 prefectures, over 237 in total for cultural preservation. This means providing material support, training for future craft-persons and the creation of media about these crafts... which is why you can find so many great videos about Japanese crafts. Every nation has a legacy of crafts worth preserving. But are there the values and will to do so?

@futurebird You’ll *never guess* which nation found the “values and will” to promote a traditional form of dance in the public school system, and *which* values those were…

@futurebird I live in Japan and sometimes collaborate with artisans - kimono makers, silk producers, tea ceremony masters, lacquer masters. All are on the verge of collapse... some going bankrupt while we're collaborating, most over 70 and having no successor. I don't think we're a good success story here

@futurebird Ascetics, sadly, are unable to be properly valued in our hyper-quantitative bureaucratic societies. And when efforts are made to quantify ascetics, like UNESCO recognitions, they immediately begin the process of simulacra production.

@futurebird So much this. The effort by not just the state but the entire Japanese society to preserve and nurture their traditions is frankly impressive.

@futurebird 1/2about a decade ago, I read a book on cormorants, and it had a whole chapter on the traditional Japanese craft of fishing using domesticated cormorants, and I guess about a third of the chapter was about how strong the government support for the craft was,

@futurebird That's the current effort, but it goes back much longer. :DThere's temples in Japan with attached wood-working workshops, and forges, along with the libraries of metal-working and wood-working techniques. They do a full dismantle-and-rebuild of the temples every 20 years, so it gives a reason for the libraries to exist. :D It's been going for centuries... :D

@futurebird I volunteer in a French #culturalHeritage centre. We have not only the #UnescoHeritage but also subsidies for #artsAndCrafts by state and regional organisations. But many professions are dying because young people can't make a living. People don't want or can't pay the high prices of handmade #crafts. We are happy when young people learn techniques as a hobby but have more and more problems to find professionals for conservation of museum pieces.
