I have discovered non-alcoholic wine and I love it! For example I can make myself "weekend brunch" and not fall asleep after. Or I can have wine with dinner and not roll the dice on feeling headachy in the morning. The quality of these beverages is much better than I remember from the last time that I tried them. I used to think it was kind of pointless or silly. But as I've aged I just don't like alcohol as much. It's refreshing to have a drink that isn't just sweet.

@futurebird@sauropods.win Is it basically just... grapejuice?

@trinsec No. It tastes exactly like wine. But you don't feel relaxed then sleep then maybe have a headache. (or whatever alcohol tends to do to you)And there is a time for that for me. But not in the morning or really most of the time.

@mhthaung I love to drink sugar water. I can admit that. Having a more fancy way to do it that isn't super sweet is nice.

@futurebird Especially for white and rosé wines, I think they're getting really good!

@futurebird I think those beverages are getter better because there is more interest in them. Alcohol is carcinogenic and there are many other reasons to avoid it. People want "special" drinks, something other than just juices, water, pop. It's great to have alternatives, especially when we are looking to change habits.

@saxbrightwell I also think some of the nice flavors in wine and mixed drinks are linked to fun memories, so maybe there is a little nostalgia, or something in it too. Having a drink makes it feel like a party! But no need to feel drunk unless I want to. That's great.

@futurebird modern non-alcoholic beers are pretty good, too (especially the hoppy or fruity ones). Between the increased awareness of the negative health effects of alcohol and improved methods for removing alcohol from beverages (the old method was to heat alcoholic beer to boil the alcohol off, but now they use a vacuum, which doesn't negatively impact the flavour), alcohol free beverages are definitely poised to become more popular overall.

@futurebird I quit drinking a few years ago and am pleased about the expansion of NA options in the last few years. Both NA beer and wine are getting better as are the options other than Big Soda. Personally, I just wish there were more bittersweet aperitif options, NA aperitifs similar to Aperol and Campari Spritz in the US, but I realize it is a bit of a nice market. St Agrestis' Phony Negroni is about the only one, even though there are quite a few available in Italy that aren't imported.

@futurebird I had to give up drinking some years ago, and yeah, the search for ‘interesting’ nonalcoholic drinks can be challenging, especially if you don’t want lots of sugar or caffeine. My standard is actually seltzer or mineral water with a really generous chunk of lime or lemon squeezed in.I also love unsweet lassi/ayran, though that’s more of a special treat thing since it’s pretty heavy.

@SCampbell @trinsec "Giesen" Rose was the one we had this weekend. Really nice and the whole bottle is 200 cal ... I guess most of the calories are in the alcohol.

@futurebird for the first 2/3s of my 20s, I couldn't afford alcohol, and I never had the time in my schedule necessary to actually enjoy it anyway. No drunken college parties for me! . Later, if I was employed I had the money, but not the time, and if I was unemployed, I had the time, but not the money. Sometimes I wish I'd drank a little more non-alcoholic wine when I had the money for it, but ... eh, I usually prefer water, black coffee, tea, or something sweet.

@futurebird NA beer still completely fucks with my husband, though -- his system is hyper-sensitive to everything, and there's still like .05% alcohol in that stuff -- it's not 100% alcohol-free.
