Besides the term "tariff" being searched a lot the past time on Google the following ones are also searched more often"what are tariffs and who pays them""how will tariffs affect the economy""will tariffs increase prices"Funny enough this is mostly after the election :nkoFacepalm2: I also buy stupid stuff and look it up afterwards, super logical 🙅

@stux the thing is, he's using the word because he usually can pronounce it and he's been told it's a good thing by people he thinks are smart. Like the jackass in the picture who is posing for "world's dumbest human"Musk and Bezos et al LOVE tariffs because they'll manipulate them to make more money. So the issue with people being mad is that the oligarchs will be very happy and will do everything thing in their power to keep tarrifs. They're still mad FDR got rid of most of them!

@stux The blowback has already started. One manufacturing plant in PA told its workers there would be no Christmas bonuses. The company was going to be buying raw materials before the tariffs hit. They were so surprised. (Snort)

@stux It’s worth noting that it was sold alongside the promise of tax cuts to everyone.Which is also a lie, of course.I think at one point the idea of ending income taxes and adopting a national sales tax was floated during his campaign. While an interesting idea, I don’t think he understands the nuances.But while rational people will understand a tariff is a type of tax, notice his campaign never refers to it as such. It’s always in the context of targeting other countries.

@stux I worked at a US company that relied on raw material from abroad to operate. The past tariffs essentially put us on an unsustainable path and eventually lead to our location shutting down.

@stux Actually, you kind of hit on something that drives me nuts. Most people don't bother to look up products. They buy whatever has the most hype/word-of-mouth (which is usually just thoughtless repetition of hype when you look at the bulk of it.) Hence companies like Apple existing at all. (Spend 2 - 3x as much for 1/2 - 3/4 of the capabilities? But, oh, it has a pretty exterior and a huge fan base. SIGN ME UP!)People hate the effort of looking things up. But everything should be!

@stux When Trump tariffed Canadian building exports, I overheard a conversation.I had acquantences who are Trumpers asking their friends in housing building industry why their business was so bad right now, and was IMMENSELY GRATEFUL the builders did not mince words. They literally told their Trump supporter buddy that ***the tariffs ruined the housing industry for that term.***But no matter. Their brown neighbors will disappear overnight, some of them their own spouses, and they'll cry.

@stux what trump seems to not know is that Europe has ~100 Millions more citizens than US for a continent bigger than US. If the old European Dragon would awake following those election, moving toward a federal model like US, Europe would be a more powerful super power than US. We have everything in our own soil, all the land needed and all the people, all we need is the desire to not be trample by US and China...

@stux If his voters think he's going to make life affordable again, they've reached a level of dumb-cluckery that's going to open them up to a level of exploitation that will take our collective breath away, which is the likely end goal. Oligarchs are going to need drool cups and super-soaker bibs,they're salivating so much in anticipation of the fleecing to come.Time to stock up on durable pantry goods, buy any electronics or home appliances, or tend similar needs before prices soar higher.

@stux You know how companies like Walmart set up shop in small towns, putting all the little mom and pop shops out of business, then the store eventually shutters bc the location didn't turn enough profit?...This feels like that, but at a national level.
