Somewhere there is an ant. And she knows she's supposed to be carrying things, obviously, that is what you do, being an ant. But she's new on this job and it's her first day out and she's not certain she's carrying the right thing or where she is supposed to be taking it. But she is doing her best with gusto! And so can you.(this is a real thing I've seen happen to ants)

The ant solution to this problem ... if she didn't guess right is to either take the object from her and take it to the correct place... or pick the whole ant up and take her where the jobs are more on her level. It's always funny to watch.

@futurebird is that why I have a photo of an ant mysteriously hauling around a bird feather?

@futurebird You makes me want to watch and observe ants, I've never really done it for long. How did you knew it was a new ant ? Do they look different from old ants ?

@loyhena Yes, often newly emerged ants are a lighter color than their older sisters.

I've always thought of ants moving other ants as the equivalent of a function that calls another function.

@futurebird Tired: Ant colonies are intelligent.Wired: Ant colonies implement lambda functions and are Turing-complete.

@gannet She might have needed it for nest construction, they do collect twigs like this. But also, ants could probably nibble the cuticle and get a little protein. So maybe not a confused ant. Though I have seen "ant arguments" where one ant brings something into the nest then others remove it and put it in the trash and its moved back and forth several times until one side gives up.

@futurebird might finally be an explanation for this: at summer camp one time, I was sitting on the dock and felt a sharp pain on my stomach, and I look down to find and ant pulling on a hair.

@mcsquank Of course ... there is the possibility she was trying to take YOU back to the nest and that's just how she grabbed on. Ants have no real limits to their ambitions.

@Gustodon @futurebird The ants would probably use this to gain access to our computer systems.

@futurebird So ants are first-class citizens, just like first-class functions? Somehow that is unsurprising.

@futurebird I once was sitting in my favorite spot next to the fence, in the shade of the house, kinda watching the fire ants trail, and I noticed a jumping spider hopping up to the line every few times. Turns out it was stealing what they were carrying! It was so fast, the ants didn't know what hit them. Just flinched, and kept moving.
