My son, if you have put up esecurity for your neighbor, have egiven your pledge for a stranger, if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, then do this, my son, and save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor:go, hasten,1 and gplead urgently with your neighbor. Proverbs 6:1-3Is this just saying “if you made a promise you are struggling to keep admit it immediately and work hard to make it right”

@futurebird I think so, but “put up security” also seems to imply a loan.

@futurebird Some quick searching and it boils down to, essentially, co-signing a loan. Like, if you co-sign a loan for someone else & it turns out they can’t pay, then you’re on the hook. So you had better not only be able to pay, but also be sure of the person you’re supporting, because they could bankrupt you.

@futurebird been awhile, but some observations.1) the english is already weird, cuz...the hebrew...https://mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt2806.htmis out of this world.removed from us by half a dozen civilizations. I'm always doubtful we can understand it well. PLENTY of passages scholars admit they don't understand.2) often in torah, there are many levels. situations between individuals is often metaphor for situations between peoples. neighbor could be your neibhor, OR all of Israel's neibhoring nation.

@futurebird also.. chapter before it descirbes dont be seduced by stranger woman, stick to your wife. ths is a common metaphor for don't be seduced by stranger gods. tho.. the chapter before that personifies wisdom as a woman too.tho some passages definintely seem to have to do with day to day dealings with individuals

@futurebird ok, enough getting distracted by ancient texts! but i'm reading these chapters, general theme seems to be God/Solomon: I am your god, I've set for you wisdom to live by, why are you straying after other gods/systems?but then again it says don't become indebted to you neighbors? be like the ants! but ants are all neibors working together.in the end i'm finding a lot of this text a bit bonkers. too alien!

@barrygoldman1 @aadmaa He must not have watched ants at all then. It is very obvious they live in the most perfected state of anarchy if you do.

@futurebird @barrygoldman1 I think Aristotle may be in the clear on this score:"Again, of these social creatures some submit to a ruler, others are subject to no governance: as, for instance, the crane and the several sorts of bee submit to a ruler, whereas ants and numerous other creatures are every one his own master." (from the History of Animals - here - https://classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/history_anim.mb.txt)

@futurebird I'd say that he meant "if you're hosting your neighbor's SSH certificates and you had a security breach, you need to disclose it immediately without any embargo, lest you get afoul of the GDPR regulations (and of God's wrath)".

@aadmaa @futurebird yes thats it, aristotle thought honeybees had 'KING' bees. he must have not watched the 'king' lay eggs. but maybe he saw all the workers fawning over her!whereas.. he never found any queen ants, well hidden!
