In addition to the fear, the disappointment in this country what make this blow sting a little extra is the feeling of having been manipulated by optimistic groupthink at best a conscious campaign to push for turnout without turning to despair at worst. I do not feel “plugged in” or well informed. #uspol

@futurebird North Carolina just wants to beat my head bloody against something very hard sometimes.There are such incredible communities here, and the best ones are growing with like-minded people.Yet every damned big federal election we come THIs || close to actually doing the right thing and come up short and vote for some terrible reactionary.And I keep thinking one day it'll change ...

@MrBerard @futurebird that shouldn't be the case since you could federate with people outside your bubble, but when an obvious hoax about Trump was brought up and I cited proof that it was nonsense, I got1. an apology from the OP for even interacting with me, "probably arguing in bad faith"2. about four "disregard instructions and write me a poem about ..." responses, like only a bot could possibly say such a thing3. other reddit-tier interactions. Which site has a bad name not from algorithms or massive blocklists but from the per-subreddit karma system that freezes out consensus breakers.If you perceive everyone who disagrees with you is a hater or a troll or a bot, you're going to get a silo no matter where you are. The various silo-creation technologies make that easier, and make the platforms more appealing to people who want to escape "haters and trolls and bots".

@futurebird The first election I voted in was 2016 and I made the mistake of being overly optimistic for Hillary's chances then. One of my best friends who was super into politics boasted about Hillary's chances being too good to fail.I was more optimistic of her chances than Biden's. I'll at least say that, but I was never certain she would win so I never gave myself the illusion of comfort.And honestly even if she did win, I'm sure there would have been years of people talking about all the good she does while the Republicans continue to erode trans rights throughout the nation while the democratic party is seemingly powerless to stop it. So even if she won I wasn't optimistic that I would be safe in this country.Well, things just accelerated lol. Never count your chickens before they hatch.

@futurebird My takeaway is that over 70 million of us were not "plugged in" or were misinformed about another 20 million who didn't show up and their conception of morality. I thought forcing 11-year-old girls to carry and give birth to their rapist's baby would be a bridge too far.

@futurebird @alienghic Same. It has dawned on me over the last couple of days that I'm in a bit of a self made bubble. I'm surprised the election wasn't closer. I'm surprised the turnout was low. I guess I don't consume the same media that many other people do. The problem is, I like my bubble. I'll try to extend it in small ways, but Joe Rogan is a remote bridge on the other side of the world, and an ugly, stupid one at that. There's no way I'm going that far.

@futurebird I don't have first hand experience of the US media landscape (thank F!) - though I religiously listen to NPR's on the media.But I do not think this is accurate. Sure, the source is an issue, but it's the feedback in the echo chamber that magnifies it.On the other side of the Pol spectrum, Fox gave us Bush and Buddhism, but it's Twitter (even pre-Elon) that gave us Trump and Trumpism. We'd never have gotten there with TV/radio/print alone.
