I don't understand why #xmpp has no more success? There are many clients over all operating systems and hosting a server is not very complicated. If you use activate some xep, you can get a secured solution to communicate. For me, it's the good tool for instant messaging.

@adele As an enthusiastic #Conversations on #Android user I could not agree more. #XMPP is a great solution to get my parents to use because they don't want to use cell/smart phones and thus don't need a phone number to setup. #Quicksy is a great option for anyone else who doesn't mind using a phone number for easier setup and contact discovery. There is now an #iOS version in addition to Android.

@adele From my personal point of view: Many different servers, many different clients, each of either supporting different subsets of protocol extensions which may or may not include features you depend on, different features being coined and implemented multiple times by different extensions, and some widespread counter-intuitive behaviour. :gutkato_flucerba:I recall trying to get my social circle onto XMPP several years back and running into problems with encryption, presence tracking, and message delivery. Nowadays I mostly don’t run into those issues, but I did on several occasions not receive all of the messages sent to a group chat during my absence. I found Gajim to be the nicest client for me on GNU/Linux, yet its interface feels clunky and shows plenty of stuff that seems way too protocol-specific and baffling to a casual user. (Kaidan seems nice but apparently the encryption it uses is new and not really supported by other clients.) :gutkato_disokula:Compare this to Signal where you just install the app, type in the number/username and… chat with people. It has problems of its own, but the user experience and ease of use is leaps ahead of XMPP, for the average user. :gutkato_ŝultrumas:

@adele because Matrix, Telegram, Signal and others have a lot of funding, so they can make great marketing about product.
