one way to think about it is the electorate wanted Teddy Roosevelt and Donald Trump seemed the closest thing on offer.

@interfluidity Meanwhile the Democratic Party establishment remains firmly committed to “no more FDRs.”

@Simplicator i think Biden briefly was enamored of being an FDR, absent sinemanchin might have made more progress in that direction.

@interfluidity @Simplicator Blame not passing labor law reform under Carter, Clinton's NAFTA, the universities' fetish of the "transgressive" & performative over the material. 2020 was too late to fix thngs.A frequent claim is that the middle class is the crucial guarantor of democracy. I'd say that in industrial society it's as much or more a free labor movement. Our liberal middle class, unlike Germany's in the 30s, went along with Biden's pro-union policies. Unions just had too few members.

@interfluidity And if true, this means that the rest of the world is right to dismiss Americans, on average at least, as deeply unserious people.

@interfluidity I'm including not only the ones who voted, but the ones who stayed home. If you're right about the thinking of the #Trump voters, then the motivations of the nonvoters were probably similar. They couldn't stomach Trump, but they couldn't get excited about #KamalaHarris. She was no Teddy Roosevelt (and not just because of her gender). Her superiority over Trump on the issues couldn't overcome their apathy about her personally. "She has no substance" one such person told a pollster.
