I haven't done one of my "what is the burning trivia fact you've currently been desperate to tell someone and haven't had the opportunity yet" posts for a bit, please share me your current excited "Did you know??" fact (no politics please y'all, I know it's on a lot of our minds but this is a distraction zone, thanks)

@checkervest somehow the word "ribcage" is not valid in North American Scrabble

Mine is that Adonis Gardens, a practice that was popular around the second century AD of making little plantings of quick growing seeds you leave out in the morning and allow to wither over the day as part of celebrating the Adonia harvest/fertility festival, can be traced back to the cult of Dumuzid, a Sumerian deity said to be one of the kings who founded Uruk (at least 4000 years before Adonis gardens were popular) and the Dumuzid cult itself survived until the 11th century AD

Dumuzid is fascinating, the story of Dumuzid and Innana became the story of Adonis and Aphrodite and it's really cool to see cultural traditions like that, it makes me wonder what other things we take for granted that have roots this far back, like Sumerians and the 24 hour day

@checkervest so Merriam-Webster publishes the official Scrabble dictionary, and MW still spells it "rib cage," and so due to a quirk of oversight or Pedantry, this hyper-plausible word is technically a phony, and can be challenged off the board, and this is why no one likes playing Scrabble against tournament players except for other tournament players lmao

@checkervest naturally, "ribcage" is playable in the international lexicon, which uses the Collins dictionary as its primary source
