An amazing video about programming and computers from 1971. Writing pseudocode with chalk on blackboards, with pencil on paper and finally using typewriters. Even if you don't speak Polish, watch it just for the visuals, it's beautifulhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOq6RT3w4ak

@stfn That's how I learnt programming at the university 15 years ago. And the best thing was the professor who would read the code from a paper sheet, compile it in real time in his head and immediately tell you what error message you're gonna get. Gotta love those old school guys. ❤️

@stfn pamiętam jak w dzieciństwie się bawiłem tymi kartami perforowanymi i "taśmami z dziurkami" 😂

@adamczyk Nice <3 I remember my dad telling me how he learned IT in high school with pen and paper

@tg9541 It's amazing how much progress happened in the last few decades

@stfn in junior high we had those super old Macintosh computers with barely any software on them, so after three months our teacher didn't have any ideas on what to do with them without taking them apart and we spent the rest of school year learning algorithms. I remember lying on the classroom floor and drawing the flowcharts for search algorithms on those giant sheets of paper. I loved it more than anything else at school ever...!How come nobody figured out I was autistic by then is still a wonder. 😆

@adamczyk I envy you so much, all I remember from primary school IT was that turtle (LOGO?) and in junior high the teacher asked us to make a steam train in Flash :D

@tg9541 True, true, so much hard work wasted and resulting in scam, and smoke and mirrors machines

@tg9541 but there are almost always two sides to it. Powerful computers are also used to find new drugs, to predict the weather, to warn people against dangers. So not all is lost

@stfn During COVID my dad learned JS just to write an ODRA 1003/1013 emulator. He was even chasing Kamburelis when he was still alive to get some internal implementation details right. I'm still not sure how to use it tho. 😬

@stfn My first experience with programming was in 1976/77, with an IBM System 3 mainframe. Programs were converted to punch cards via a keypunch machine (always full of errors, since the teacher neglected to explain how to edit with it). Coding was done on a tablet of "FORTRAN IV encoding sheets".So you'd fill out the coding sheet, then "desk-check" it. Finally punch cards, and drop them in the queue. Wait overnight, find a printout with "syntax error" on it. Fun.
