It's hard to overstate the impact and importance of "The Wiz"-- this musical and movie brought together a never seen before star studded cast, and touched millions of young people with a wholesome and celebratory version of Black Vaudeville: a tradition that goes back to the 1890s.It didn't make a lot of sense to white audience, but it wasn't really for them. You have to understand that as a little girl seeing a black woman as the main character in a movie for kids was ... well this was it.

I met Quincy Jones when I was about 8 years old. Remarkable man. Huge creative talent, and personally I think this is his most important work. And maybe someday it will get the remake it deserves. RIP to a giant. #QuincyJones

@futurebird I grew up So Very White. This was one of the things that made me start to understand, at least a little, Black experiences. When I saw this as a teenager (many years after its heyday) and sung a song from it in a choir a little while later, (a) it was just so much fun, and (b) everything about it made it obvious that it was a Black-focused retelling to the original Wizard of Oz, meaning there *needed* to be such a thing, and that made me want to learn more.I thought of this 80s moment just a few years ago when I first heard the soundtrack to Hadestown (and a few years earlier than that with Hamilton).Sometimes what's written between the lines is very loud.

@futurebird @PsyChuan Then maybe you'll appreciate: in grad school (late 90s/early 00s) I was once at a downtown Jazz & Rib Fest or something and saw a fellow grad student, just an acquaintance. I was a little embarrassed to be staring at her b/c she was wearing a top that showed her entire back. On her back was a wild, art-deco, colorful image. It was a full-back tattoo. she saw me looking and cheerfully told me that she loved to show off her tattoo (we were in clinical psych, which is a weirdly conservative field; lots of polos and khakis in grad school). She said it was a reproduction of one of the original illustrations from one of the Oz books. I can't remember now (and had no luck with 15 minutes of image searching) but I think it was a fairy (?) or something. I remember being impressed at (a) such a gorgeous scene on someone's back, (b) how long she probably had to lie under the needle to get it done, and (c) how fearless she was in showing it off to like 10,000 people.

@futurebird I watched long ago, when it was broadcast live. Then I bought it because I was reminded of it during the musical Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode.Probably because Sweet was played by Hinton Battle (aka Tin Man). The movie is a classic, and it is an essential part of the American story as far as I’m concerned. Maybe I don’t understand it the way black America understands it, and I’m fine with that. It’d be hard to remake, but whatever keeps it around is good.

@futurebird I always thought it was cool and strange.I was surprised eventually to realize how completely the script was rewritten for the movie--the stage version of it might have been the most faithful adaptation of Baum's original "Wizard of Oz" ever made, but the movie script added a lot of modern allegory, which was a whole other layer. The songs were basically the same though.

"It didn't make a lot of sense to white audiences, but it wasn't really for them."THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS!!! it's amazing how they took a story from the hegemonic culture and said, 'nah, this isn't for your gaze. this is for every little Black girl and boy out there'. i watched this in Puerto Rico and asked mami to take us to a movie theater without the subtitles. it was important for me to have that whole immersive experience without the translation. @futurebird i knooooooooow! it's weird am ok with it because he was 91. when was the last time you heard of a Black male celebrity dying at that age? we lost Michael and Prince so young, YKWIM? he got his flowers in life but, OMFG, in one of my deep dives at Archive.org i found all of his jazz and classical music discography predating his work for MJ and it friggin' blew my mind. he had an amazing career but i often wonder if he could have done even more. the man was a real prodigy.

but that's the beauty of it: it really was a production for kids first, adults later but more importantly for Black folks centering Black culture. i grew up in Puerto Rico and the movie still resonated with us Black folks in so many levels because we share many of the tropes and what y'all call these days memes, from our African heritages. Quincy was a musicologist that felt comfortable weaving different histories and musical elements to make things click in a production.@Sean @futurebird
