Exotic pets are a bad idea because if you find that you can't take care of the pet, if it is too expensive, or time consuming, or the pet is just difficult you will need to rehome it or kill it. Do not become a part of the problem that has turned Florida into an open air random snake and lizard zoo. Releasing native species isn't good either. But if exotics were much more rare in the pet trade the threats keeping pets can pose to wild environments could be reduced.

@futurebird The main rationale in the Netherlands is that exotics do poorly as house pets.Stress from human interaction, too little space, hard to get good food, and so on.Outside, the vast majority just gets killed by the weather or lack of food. They straight up banned a lot of animals, and went to a whitelist system.I am, however, allowed an alpaca, so it's not too onerous a limitation.
