When the economy crashes it's great if you are rich. You can buy companies and stock. You don't have to pay as much for labor because workers are desperate. Granted this is a very short term thing. In the long run, it is perhaps not so good that the pie is no longer growing in size... even if you happen to get to eat more of it. (Or not eat, no one can eat *that* much. No one can wisely spend that much money.)Climate change has some similar features.

It's naive to think that wealthy people are better at the marshmallow test than the rest of us. The inaction of climate change and their glee at inflicting economic harm for short term gain proves otherwise. Marshmallow Test:Child who can't wait and eats both: poor impulse controlChild who waits: Better impulse controlChild who finds the whole bag under the table and stuffs them in their mouth, gets sick: future billionaire

Friendly reminder that "The Marshmallow Test" may be a better test of how much a child trusts the adult who is running the test than anythings else. (And children can have good reasons for not trusting random people "in charge")Many of the correlations with "success" might just be measuring class divides.

Children of parents with more economic power are more obedient in such circumstances because power structures serve them well so trusting they will work as advertised is smart. Children of parents with less power have already started to discover that they may be treated unfairly and it's best to get their payment upfront. Also smart. What's not so smart is that such a divide exists.

@futurebird For me, the best use of the Marshmallow Test is "AI."There are issues with trust. And food insecurity. It's not a good test for what it's designed for. What it does is lay out a simple clear scenario

@futurebird For me, the best use of the Marshmallow Test is "AI."There are issues with trust. And food insecurity. It's not a good test for what it's designed for. What it does is lay out a simple clear scenario for which there was no prior preparation or pre-programming, and then you are asked to make a decision based on your own thoughts and experience. We take it for granted that human toddler can do that. An LLM can't.

@futurebird Indeed, wasn't the marshmallow test debunked as unreproducible?

@futurebird They are also willing to bend the system to their needs, and know it will accommodate rather than kick them for it. My kid goes to a rather pricy school for dyslexia. It is an entirely different level of affluence than I have ever been exposed to. But most importantly, she is learning to read. Seeing her learn to navigate systems in that high affluence way, and the confidence to do match, has been an absolute trip. She sweet talked her way into another class's field trip and got all her teachers to sign off on missing their class for a day. I can't even get my head around being able to do that at age 13. I trusted the system, but I wasn't about to try and bend the rules to meet my needs.

@futurebird this! Also, the whole thing depends on too many personal variables. Some kids are starving, some starving kids eat all at once, some starving kids store food away, some kids hate marshmallows, some favor them, some are anti authority, some are people pleasers, on & on…. Personally, i think food is a terrible thing to test kid psych on!!
