My (UK) pay-as-you-go mobile phone provider, 1p Mobile, have just increased their minimum monthly top-up to £5 (£10 for two months). The feels a lot considering I only use my phone number to log in to WhatsApp and to take like three phone calls a year.Does anyone know of any cheaper UK PAYG options? I really just want to keep my phone number connected for as cheaply as possible.

@ChrisWere I used Lebara in the past, they have a sim only plan for £5 a month but they also have a pay-as-you-go model but that's also £5 minimum. But if i remember correctly, they keep your sim active for 60 days after last top-up, so you can pay £5 every 2 months or so.

@ChrisWere Lebara is £5 per month ( max) but includes EU ( or Spain at least) see Martins Money Matters.

@ChrisWere I will say that I switched my contract 3 phone to payg (still with 3) when I left the UK 7 years ago and it still works for incoming calls. I'm pretty sure they say 3months since last topup, and your milage may very well vary but they don't seem set up to revoke numbers.

@ChrisWere 02 classic - was recommended to me as cheapest way to keep a number on a mobile - I send a text out once a month and that keeps it activehttps://www.o2.co.uk/help/pay-as-you-go/classic-pay-as-you-go

@ChrisWere I use Honest Mobile who have a SIM only option super cheap. I pay about £9 a month now with their loyalty discount. They're also an ethical business. We both get a free month if you do go with them & use my referral code miss.lexisaurus2756https://honestmobile.com/

@ChrisWere Up until recently I was on vodafone, and you could buy a big value bundle once, top up, and then cancel the big value bundle again, and then just put more credit on once every six months like in **the old days**. I've been on EE again for about a year but might still work that way?

@ChrisWere I looked in to this recently - does #1pmobile still offer a 1 year option for around £40?

@ChrisWere another vote for O2 Classic - but the sims seem to now be getting scarce. Possibly it will change in the future, but at the moment you can buy a top up which doesn't expie after a month. I use mine in an old phone I use as a satnav, so it's mainly data that I use. Possibly I will need to send a text at some point to keep it active.

@ChrisWere Do you actually want cellular service or just to keep the number active? If it's the latter then perhaps https://www.aa.net.uk/voice-and-mobile/voip-information/I have one of my old mobile numbers there, incoming sms get turned into emails and because it hardly ever gets calls I just have it set to forward to another number and pay the few pence that ends up costing if it does receive a call. (I could set it up as a voip line but I rarely bother)

@ChrisWere I second the recommendation for GiffGaff. I have an account there I haven't needed to top up for some years, just sending a text every 6 months. Three.co.uk also have a PAYG account with non-expiring call credit but their out of bundle rates are higher than GiffGaff. (I used to use 3's 3-2-1 PAYG before they whacked the prices up. I'm now on a Lebara £5/m deal - get these via MoneySavingExpert for a somewhat better deal than directly from Lebara.)

@ChrisWere I use https://www.lebara.co.uk/en/topuppage.html for my "backup" phone: as long as a call/text is made/received every 90 days it seems to be okay (no monthly fee). Data is quite expensive on the PAYG plan though. I also have a mobile number via AAISP's voip service: but did find out that some services (iirc Instagram) do recognise it as a voip number and don't allow signups- hence the physical sim.

@ChrisWere would £16 for five years with RWG Mobile work for you? Not sure if you can dial out but you can receive calls and texts.https://www.rwgmobile.wales/webshop/buy-forget/5-year-sim-data-only-100mb-per-month/

@ChrisWereSomeone I know uses Asda Mobile (also makes like three calls a year), no mandatory top-ups, but calls cost 15p a minute so it is expensive if you do make a call.RWG Mobile is cheaper, but the person I know couldn't get a signal where they lived. No mandatory top-ups either, and just 5p a minute for calls.
