#SundayThoughtExperimentHow would it change MMP in NZ if we either;1) ban coalition agreements, so the tail(s) can't wag the dog. Allowing only supply-and-confidence agreements, with no portfolio positionsOR2) Oblige the winning coalition to give one Cabinet seat for every six MPs (120 MPs / 6 = 20 Cabinet seats)#elections #NZ #MMP #ElectoralReform

@strypey I don't like 1. What would you do if it was 50/50 between the two parties in a coalition? 2 looks workable 👍

@nu> What would you do if it was 50/50 between the two parties in a coalition?I tried to ironman your argument by coming up with a scenario where that's possible. The only one I could think of was one with only 2 parties, each with 50% of the seats. AFAIK this has never happened in an FFP election. The odds against it happening in an MMP election are astronomical. In any other case, as we've seen, one or more smaller parties would break the tie. Giving one of the larger parties a majority.

@strypey my bad, I did not make that scenario very clear. What I meant to say was; what if there was a winning coalition of, each with an equal share of the vote?

@nu> What I meant to say was; what if there was a winning coalition of, each with an equal share of the vote?Yes, that's I interpreted it. If you try to describe a specific scenario, while anticipating obvious counterarguments, I suspect you'll come to the same conclusion I (see above). But I'd be intrigued to be wrong about that ...
