Hey you know how computers sometimes have multiple USB (A) ports at different orientations and it's the worst thing?Bad idea: a PC with dual floppy drives, but one is mounted upside down

@foone My Atari 800XL didn’t care which way you put the disk in, as long as you notched it. OG SSD!

@foone I'd be pretty amazed if some form factor didn't pull some real bullshit along these lines at some stage, because they sure did love to pull some real bullshit even in the age of floppy media lol

@foone supporting single sided low density, but on opposite sided so to load stuff you have to remove the disk and put. It back in to the other. Then try and set a Speed run for Monkey Island 2

I said this because I saw a gif of some commercial from the 80s where an actor is showing off a computer and puts the disk in upside down.I forgot that DEC actually shipped a CP/M machine that actually did this.

@foone @mos_8502 I think the DECmate II, III, and III+ used the same drives. The DECmate II looks (externally) nearly identical to the Rainbow. Inside, it's a single-chip 12-bit PDP-8 that runs WPS-8, an OS dedicated to word processing.I have one of those in my warehouse, but have never tried booting it.

@foone Omg I have one of those still working (not a Rainbow, but a Professional 380) and I keep inserting the floppies upside down.

@foone @mos_8502 I learned Z80 assembly language on a Rainbow 100...such fond memories! That dual floppy drive tho LOL. The drive has orange stripes on it, and DEC supplied floppies had matching orange stickers on them that were kinda like the write protect stickers at the edge of the floppy. They reminded you which way to orient the media. The 2 drives shared a single drive spindle and I think head positioned too so they couldn't be accessed at the same time. When you did a PIP between A and B the drive would be all clickety-clackety as the relay switched the heads between drives with each chunk of data.I remember how advanced my cheapo coleco ADAM felt after that when I saw it simultaneously reading and writing between drives LOL.

@foone But only upside-down for one of the two floppy drives, to keep users on their toes.

@foone @mos_8502 you know who invented the "it's not a bug, it's a feature" slogan? DEC !PS: some research showed that it was probably Grace Hopper who first used the phrase.

@foone At last, a use for the B: Drive. When you're done with one side of your floppy, remove it from the top drive and insert it upside down into the bottom drive, which also has the single r/w head mounted at the top but the sensors for the notch and index hole (because duh!) on the other side. It's all so clear now!
