I don't blame Democrats for pushing at the Epstein story again. Yet when I saw headlines about "new" information I kind of rolled my eyes. You see I've always thought that Trump probably participated in the abuse of those girls as apparently a lot of very wealthy and powerful people did. But, I also think the story is kind of useless since there are other better documented instances of Trump being a sexual predator. Those sort of powerful men don't really see it as a crime. 1/

But I did always wonder why Epstein was arrested *when* he was arrested. Why did his protection run out? It could have just been that he was no longer useful enough... but there is a theory that makes sense: Epstein had evidence that could harm Trump. When those powerful people realized Trump wouldn't play nicely as president (that is, he wouldn't limit his self-dealing to the polite and typical level, he'd sell out the whole country) they would have pressured Epstein. 2/

It's one thing to enrich yourself a little while in office, quite another to allow the balence of global power to shift away from the US by selling out the country for flattery and cheap favors. Trump isn't intelligent or well-informed enough to realize how badly he was being played. That he was giving up too much. This is why he has some powerful enemies. The pressure on Epstein would have come from every direction and it would have been immense. 3/

And that is how he ended up arrested after being untouchable for so long. And then dead. Powerful people fighting brought it all to a head.

@futurebird Every bit of this. Especially that these men do not really view this behavior as criminal.

@futurebird I always found it curious how much people trued to pin the death on the Democrats and Clinton in particular when it was most likely Trump or one of his people.

@InkySchwartz At that point in time what would having a bunch of stuff about Bill Clinton have done? Some harm but who had the most to lose? And who had power?Of course, maybe he really did kill himself. That isn't important. He was collected and hidden from the public. Secrets were kept. Then there is that interview where Trump hesitates when asked if he'd release the Epstein files. Dude is transparent.

My sense from seeing the shape of this negative space is that Epstein had tried roping so many celebrities, scientists, authors and other “useful” people into their little kompromat net that between the scale of his operation and the fearlessness of a few of his targets, it wasn’t a decision by the “powers that be”. It started coming apart all on its own.The Weinstein thing coming apart may have finally done it. Without that we may never have heard about Epstein.@futurebird

A data point, the shape of this negative space: 20 years ago it was a flex among scifi writers to say “Billionaires ask my advice.” Somewhere about 2008 or so, that stopped. Cold. Dead.I imagine the thinking now is that whoever you are, writer, scientist, visioneer or whatever, if a billionaire asks for advice, get paid in cash up front and only meet with them in a public place.@futurebird

@andyhilmer Elon Musk used to have so much good will and good press. It's aparent he's always been like this but I wonder why he decided to squander it all?And from what I can tell all he had to do was just... not use twitter. Twitter ruined his image so badly he tried to buy it to put things back the way they were. And of course that didn't work.

@vivtek @andyhilmer Yeah... but nobody needs to know. Everyone could still think he was a "pretty smart guy who knows about rockets and stuff"

@vivtek @andyhilmer Maybe it was discovering he couldn't really control people the way he seems to long to do... even with all that money.

No fucking clue. A bad(-ish) actor got inside his decision loop? The chemical hairplugs made him nuts? The social isolation and his kid going all in on being trans? Maybe just that one. Eugenicists always end up retro-phrenologising themselves when the reality of human diversity becomes undeniable.https://wiki.lspace.org/Retrophrenology@futurebird

It’s not just the US. The destruction of democracy and open culture is core to these richie-rich freakazoids and their pet cops. The Epstein-adjacent scandals in the UK have been detonating for decades. Witness the unspoken story of Ghislane and her father and scum like Jimmy Savile. It’s been endemic in European aristocracies for centuries. There’s an interesting book discussing this culture using Victorian true crime, They All Love Jack: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Robinson#Books@futurebird
