I've got the electronics repair version of the second-hand embarrassment some people get watching sitcoms. The repair guy on YouTube just went, in voice over, "now watch very carefully: I'm about to learn something that'll stay with me forever" and they're probing around a power supply, bare hands visible, right next to the AC section, and the whole thing is live and powered.I had to pause and type this up because I do not want to see this fool zap themselves

@foone At least the voiceover lets you know it wasn’t fatal.

@cinebox I did it on accident once! I used to wear metal jewelry, and one of them accidentally contacted an AT power switch back in the late 90s.I got a zap , my jewelry got blackened, and that PSU never worked again

@foone Ooh I've been that fool multiple times, and it's bullshit that they'll learn from it, IMHO.

@foone I had something similar happen except it wasn't plugged in. It was an Apple computer and I figured the exposed internal HV stuff had bleeder resisters because they are so overpriced and "well engendered".Turns out they don't and it's been a while since I've been zapped that hard.It only made my arm muscles contract because I was only using a single hand but man that stuff is scary.

@foone Poking blindly under a device that was turned off but still plugged in and I got a nice jolt from my fingers as they wandered too near the live side of the switch. Mustn't have been the full 240 because *somehow* my fingers still worked fine immediately afterwards, but it was a lesson, one I'm quite happy to have survived.

@foone it's called a "flyback" transformer because that's what you do when you touch it

@foone Early in my career I was a junior factory maintenance worker. I was tasked with blowing the dust out of a tube servo amplifier chassis which had been retrofitted with solid state workings. I held the chassis with one hand and the brass air gun in the other… and the air gun made accidental contact with one of the (unbled) HV supply capacitors. 400 VDC from one hand to the other got my attention. I figure I was lucky not to get electrocuted.

@foone hey, I once tripped the breakers in a section of our school when I messed around with the AT power switch.

@foone I'm struggling to imagine a reason why they thought it was a good idea. What video was it?

@foone I guess either he's new to power working around power supplies, or he just got fucking careless, which I guess happens to all of us once. Sometimes only once.I took 400v from a CRT drive section once because I didn't realize the adjustment pots required non-conductive tools on this monitor. And I'll never forget the 26kV from the Asteroids display because my HV probe was too damn short to get where I needed without putting myself in harm's way.
