I do not need this gadget but I'm unreasonably attracted to it. Part of it is how cool my inner 12 year old would have found this in the 90s. This is what I thought the future would look like. Part of it is that antennae and those knobs begging to be turned, just a little. And then some vague notion of living off a pile of SD cards watching old movies as the bits slowly fade...

I've messed with this type of device before, their native software is horrible. But, if some nerds wanted to do a kick starter to write better fitting software... well... WELL THEN.It costs about $60

@futurebird Kid me would've loved this. I vaguely remember having a tiny battery-driven CRT TV scored from some junkyard in the 90s, but I might have dreamed that. ^^

@futurebird Looks like a Raspberry Pi project with a custom skin. Worthwhile on my book. And watching movies from SD cards seems sensible – as is anything capable of working autonomously, offline.

@futurebird I've got most of the parts for a "moviebox" I've been thinking about building which would store my library, have HDMI out for hotel room screens, and an IR remote to control it.The sad part is that the parts total is considerably more than $60 (and won't look this nice!) 🫠

@Gustodon I think I'm the only person in the world who would want a media player, with buttons and such... and SD card slot is a must. But also I love bluetooth headphones. Which isn't very audiophile gold plated connectors of me is it?Sony makes such a player but it's one of those "lossless" things and I just want to listen to books and pop music. It isn't that deep.

@futurebird Have you looked at a Yoto? They're audio players, without screens, for kids. We have a mini and a full size one and think they're great. Big chunky buttons and connects to bluetooth headphones.

@WesternInfidels @Gustodon If I want to use a different device... for me it needs to be DIFFERENT. I can put an app on my phone to play files. Using an old phone isn't very appealing, it's just... using an old phone. Better to donate it so it could be used as a phone. IDK if that's what it is for you, but I used to have a little SD card audio player I made myself out of 3D printed bits, and hot glue. It was so ugly, but I loved taking it for walks and listening to books.
