I remember Google+, and the idee fixe and mad hype around it. (Google was afraid of Facebook.) G+ was a ghost town. But for the first year or so the G+ team reported astronomical engagement numbers. Huhh? Finally we learned they were counting every G+ notification dropped at the top of Gmail as an "engagement."Anyway, I wonder how they're measuring this... https://www.businessinsider.com/google-earnings-q3-2024-new-code-created-by-ai-2024-10

@Mer__edith I really miss Google+... Didn't much care for the circles, but really liked the reach and content updates I got through Google+. I felt more like a community member there than either Twitter of Facebook.

@Mer__edith I remember the initial wave of interest for Google+, I made an account there, and really like the idea of circles. And yes, it almost immediately became a ghost town, in those times Facebook was everything.

@stfn @Mer__edithGoogle+ was never a ghost town for me. There was always tons going on. A bit too much drama perhaps, but plenty of cool projects and ideas. I still miss it. No other social network I've seen comes close to the value I got out of G+.

@mcv @Mer__edith @stfn I loved G+. It filled a spot that Facebook didn't for me - mostly reasonable conversions with people I met there rather than IRL, with similar interests. Far less random vitriol.Mastodon is finally starting to fill that void for me since G+ was shuttered. I live distant from most of my friends and family, and FB is the main way we stay connected, so I'm still there. Would love to get them all to Mastodon.

@stfn @mcv @Mer__edith indeed. It's taken me more time to develop my feed here... But the process felt similar to how I remember it going on G+. Initially very few people I 'knew' on either platform, and either none or almost none I knew IRL. Mastodon now and G+ then is for interacting with people I don't personally know with civil conversation. I don't even try that anymore on FB because it devolves to a shit show so fast.
