       I can tell you part of this is defeatism. When your margins are so low that you feel like saving is pointless, you don't have motivation to put away cash and instead just spend it on fleeting things you marginally enjoy. Same psychology behind "avocado toast". You'll never afford a house anyway so why would you even try? I'm sure this is a studied thing and contributes to the ruling class wanting to keep everyone right on the poverty line.
