Does anyone else use the dubious "Next Door" clone called "One Roof" ? (it's next door for apartments)Have you noticed a sudden surge is random chit chat on the app about nothing from new accounts?I think we are about to get some very toxic, probably vodka stinking spam. The new accounts haven't gone political YET but I remember this from 2016

@futurebird I reckon you're right. Very keen eyed to pick up on if it turns out to be true

@Azuaron I remember it was worst in that last week. Every corner of the net. Every random little app.

@futurebird On my corner of Nextdoor there was a recent surge in accounts of "people" with Chinese surnames all offering short random quotations from famous thinkers. They were all in different neighborhoods, but the basic pattern was identical.

@futurebird Wait—these apps have CHAT FUNCTIONS? How does that work? Do they display the purported address of the person sending the message?

@futurebird Oh god, for a second there I mixed up NextDoor with Ring and thought that the home security camera came with a chat function. Which would be wild indeed.

@johnlehet How do you do that with a group of people for whom, if they have a computer, it is a phone?

@johnlehet I do not agree that email is platform agnostic.

@johnlehet Email was designed to be used on desktop computers. Although most people might have an email address (to sign up for things) checking it on a regular basis, and using it ... let alone using a listserve isn't really something many non-desktop users do. There is this whole swath of the internet that isn't well understood by those of us who use ... laptops and desktop computers... it's very different. This is one of the issues that keeps the fedi from catching on.

@futurebird @johnlehet My mother used to do email on a POTS phone with a tiny pull-out QWERTY keyboard.

@futurebird @johnlehet Is there a specific thing preventing people from reading and sending email from a phone? I read email on a phone all the time, and could also technically send it from there (I much prefer the computer keyboard, but that applies to everything else as well).I am at some level aware that there are some people who don't always see email — I have family members in that category — but I still haven't figured out what makes it so hard when every phone comes with an email app installed.

@futurebird @johnlehet I use email on a daily basis from my phone -- because I have to. It's the main way my kid's school communicates with parents, and it is exhausting. Sometimes we get multiple emails per day, and that's not even including the messages sent via Talking Points and text. I wish it were all email or all one app but hate having to check 3 different things several times a day and get a bajillion notifications. And none of this is just the school and teachers! 😫

@futurebird @johnlehet I love email. Checking it on my phone is terrible. I blame the apps, not email.

@futurebird @johnlehet email is not as accessible as say physical reality but is more common than having an address.email works on nearly every device that can connect to the internet, cost no money in addition to the connection costs, and is 1 of a small number of foss protocols that rivals social media or forums.email is also older than most people at this point and i think the mass majority atleast are aware of itim not really sure of a software technology that is more accessible
