one of the best things I witnessed in life was teaching the significance of 2137 to a group of Dutch people

@collectifission haha, ok :)In short, 21:37 is the exact time when the Pope John Paul II died. And here in Poland his final days have been widely televised, widely shown all over the media. When he died, 21:37 was repeated again and again everywhere. And so came a reaction, 21:37, as the whole JP2 person became a meme, and since then, 2137 is often used as a random number in a humorous way. This is a very short introduction into the massive cultural phenomena of pope memes in this country

@collectifission And a part of this, let's say, tradition, is writing 21:37 on social media whenever there is 21:37 on the clock.

@stfn 'Pope memes' is a new thing and yet it sounds so quintessential Polish.

@collectifission Oh right, this is another very important part of it. Some time after his death, somebody, in very good faith, published a highly photoshopped photo of JP2, which became the basis of the majority of the memes

@stfn You forgot one detail :D@collectifission as You can see on the photo, pope became very "yellow" - and since then it's not just any "żółty" ("yellow" in polish), it's "rzułty" ("yellow" but written with an intentional two ortographic errors - it's spelled in the same way, but errors make it more... accented? :D )

@collectifission @stfn This stuff got serious, even some sociological papers were published on the topic. It’s one of the aspects of generation gap in Poland. It’s fun to watch all these memes, and then watch reactions to them on the public. Like, IIRC on some gaming event dudes started singing „Barka” (pope’s fav song) at 21:37 for fun, and one of politicians unironically commented that this is beautiful that young people feel so much respect to John Paul II.

@borutzki @collectifission " It’s one of the aspects of generation gap in Poland." This. One of the reason for the spread of pope memes was the young people protesting against being forced to mourn for a guy they did not care about. And yes, I remember, everybody was basically forced to mourn.

@stfn @collectifission Yeah, the cult of pope was pretty strong in 00s. And one thing that may have triggered this meme is making it commercial, like putting pope everywhere (eg. souvenirs from some random town, alleged „pope was here” places and so on). Fun fact here is that the absurdity on which the whole meme was based, had been created mostly by people who seriously respected pope. But seemingly, it was never understood by them.
