@seachanger Oh my god. I kind of hate all of the attempts at taking kids phones and the vague notions about “phone bad” that fuel them. And there is something almost poetic about how much this exposes the lack of careful consideration at the heart of such anxious draconian actions. No ma’am the kids aren’t the ones with the problem with how they use technology. They almost never are.

@futurebird @seachanger I do think there is an issue with technology that is exploiting our vices. But it does affect all of us. It is a constant struggle to keep on the straight and narrow and our brains engaged.

@futurebird @seachanger as a parent of a teen, I agree. While i understand how frustrating it might be for some teachers, i also know that plenty of teachers have classroom policies that work without this bs.

@DEDGirl @seachanger If I have seen a student messing with a phone in my class I ask them to stop, but I also wonder what’s wrong with my lesson that they have that little to do. Is it too hard? too easy? too boring?

@futurebird @seachanger Yes!!! 🙌 Exactly! And, as a parent, my child was in a school shooter situation in 1st grade, and has a complicated medical condition, so “I” don’t like the idea of her being without it. When I read about the new CA law banning them starting in 2026, I was relieved my child will be graduating then & we won’t have to address it. Tbh, the school shootings alone are enough to make me hate this. Today, phones/cameras are protection too.

@futurebird @DEDGirl @seachanger nah... come on... i'll stare at twitter even when i have work to do. the immediate response property is hard to resist. but no i don't do this in public situations... i's have to watch a classroom situation again to see what;s what

@futurebird @seachanger I think of how much fun it is to tell parents, while they're visiting with their kids, "No phone at the dinner table!" in a very stern voice.I figure a lot of the no phones at school stuff taps into a similar sense of control/dominance.Except it's not a joke anymore when it becomes policy.

@alienghic @seachanger This is a totally a factor. But there is also a nebulous set of fears around "short attention spans" and "vanity"If your social media is bad and toxic and you are an adult it is worth asking "why do I put up with this? How could it be better? Who could help me to make it better"Social media should enrich our lives and be a generally positive force. That isn't unreasonable or naive it is possible.

@futurebird @seachanger the kids' brains are malleable clay under the expert hands of widely understood psych manipulators and "AI" ghouls that run the show online, and unless your minor child is somehow tech literate and TECH CULTURE literate all at the same time, my goodness you have a special child. The psych manipulation today is not the same as grandma's psych manipulation, and most parents, too, do not understand this.
