I wish we'd adopt the notion of "fancy gift fruit" as I've seen in Japan in the US. The idea is for a gift you can buy someone a really exceptional perfectly ripe carefully selected strawberry, or a peach. And of course one could also hunt one down on their own. It's more memorable the jewelry and more exciting than chocolate.

@futurebird @savvykenya there is Harry and David—which i've always wanted to get!—but just like here in japan, it's tres expensive, so i never had a subscription to pears 😢😅

@medley56 @scoutie @savvykenya The US "gift fruit" options have been more about looks than taste IMO.We have Oshi berries in NYC and I have a problem and am going broke.

@futurebird amen. Gift fruit is brilliant: you’re basically guaranteed to enjoy it, you have to enjoy it _now_, and it will never clutter up your apartment.

@futurebird A while back I found someone online offering a subscription to unusual banana varieties. It was very tempting. I like bananas and I've rarely tasted anything that isn't a Cavendish. Plus, ya know, support commercial growers who are diversifying away from blight prone varieties. Alas, I had just gotten a layoff notice and didn't feel comfortable signing up for a several hundred dollar subscription.

@futurebird in the abstract it sounds like a wonderful idea, but in reality, I find I often turn down most of the fruit I'm gifted because ... evolutionary fact here: fruit evolved to make you poop, and I already poop 3 times a day, and I don't need to poop more frequently than that, and it doesn't take much fruit to force me to make extra visits to the toilet.

@futurebird The Asian groceries in LA (especially H-mart) have gift boxes of fruit that is reasonably priced. But it is more special varieties (e.g. citrus grown on Jeju island) than exceptionally perfect, although sometimes the fruit is individually wrapped. The one time I brought someone 50 pounds of unusual avocados, they were just confused (but apparently they had never had mayo-free guacamole or even an avocado before).

@josh0 @mym @Laplantgenetics Nothing. Is. Sacred. Didn't we learn that from the incident with the raisins in the coleslaw? The lives that were changed forever by the time that someone used black forest ham to make collard greens? We have strayed so far from God's light.

@mym @Laplantgenetics @futurebird Wait, what is _non_-mayo-free guacamole? I know avacado is often used as a mayo substitute, but hasn't it always been one of the main ingredients in guacamole? Or am I getting totally confused here somehow?

@kechpaja @mym @Laplantgenetics I am not an expert but isn't the point of guacamole to crush up avocado? In a little stone bowl? With the garlic?

@futurebird @kechpaja @mym @LaplantgeneticsAvocado, garlic, chilli, lime juice and olive oil. In my opinion.A lot of recipes include tomato, but I hate that.Mayonnaise has its uses, but does not belong anywhere near guacamole.

@futurebird @kechpaja @mym @Laplantgenetics growing up guacamole was always avocados mashed with whatever was the preferred salsa picante. I stick with that, although now I prefer to crush somewhat more crudely. For a two ingredient recipe you can get a lot of variation with your choice of salsa, salsa brava, tapatio, sriracha, or whatever.

@Laplantgenetics @josh0 @mym @futurebird My Midwestern aunt used to make "pizza" using dinner roll dough that came in a tube (poppin' fresh or something?), ketchup, and American cheese. She also called carbonated beverages "pop" so we knew she was sus.

@futurebird Given that cocoa pods are fruit, is chocolate not a form of "fancy gift fruit"?Personally, I'd rather not give our grocery store oligarchs any incentives to market fruit as a luxury item or to raise prices further. It already feels like a luxury item at times.

@futurebird I have gifted an Asian pear to someone I liked. That fruit that is sort of like a cross between an apple and a pear and is incredibly juicy and crisp? She had never had one, trusted me enough to try a new food, and the look on her face as she bit in was priceless.Giving people new experiences or sensations is the most incredible gift of all.
