Sometimes I've been mistaken for a Republican when I've complained about how Nancy Pelosi has bought and sold stocks while in congress, and often to her advantage. That's embarrassing. Pelosi has probably done a bit more good than harm and she stands leagues above what we are witnessing with Musk and with Trump and the wash of cash flooding our politics. But, it is through that crack in the door that this flood began. The disintegration of boundaries.

If we can make it past this election this issue of money in politics must become more important. I don't know how to get people to care about it enough to overcome the inertia and self-interest that keeps it out of media. YES I'm saying that we need out elected official to strive to be perfect about these things. Yes taking a gift of $100 concert tickets ought to be a scandal for any of them.

@Nonya_Bidniss This kind of thing can be annoying and goofy, but I've come to treasure such cultural norms the more that I see what it's like when they don't exist. But too often these things just apply to working class people maybe with a little professional power. Not to the people who need to be scrutinized most in this way.

@Nonya_Bidniss @futurebird I love your posts, but maybe you've forgotten the meaning of "representative government." Pelosi serves herself and her interests first, before the people SF.

@futurebird ... claiming that you're a Republican is a sheer indication that they've never read anything else you've ever posted, period...But beyond that, what's wrong with the idea? We SHOULD be making sure that our politicians are free of scandals and bribes and the various other things which we've assumed are part of the whole political process, because that's how we make things better. That said, politicians, IMO, should be paid a living wage to make sure that they can pay attention to their jobs, and one of the parts of 'living wage' is 'living' -- so they can spend $100 on a concert ticket (don't get me started, seriously don't) to actually spend time being a human being instead of a cog. Without accepting it for 'favours'.With all that, complaining about one's constituents' failings isn't exactly disloyalty. It's, what do you call it, patriotism. Gotta fix the issues to make things better.

@Nonya_Bidniss @futurebird NASA sets a $20 limit on receiving "almost anything of monetary value" outside of official compensation. So I have taken care about sending management demo pieces about my research, as it should be (3D prints have monetary value).Meanwhile; we have 6 illegitimate extremists on SCOTUS who want to pretend it is okay for an elected official to walk into a business, say "I need money", and walk out with a check...

And for you and I there is something like a $2700 limit on cash contributions to political campaigns directly. If you give more than that they will send the money back. But, you can give as much as you want to PACs, and if you are wealthy start one, and stand on stage with no transparency at all promoting a political candidate. No consequences! It's a joke. Why even have the rule about maximum contributions? At least all of those are reported.@michael_w_busch @Nonya_Bidniss

@michael_w_busch @Nonya_Bidniss Not all PACs are out to do evil, but all PACs turn politics into a contest where the one with the most money wins.

@Nonya_Bidniss @futurebird Taking the "you're allowed to manage your own portfolio" out of political positions might change the makeup of people who choose to seek them. That might be nice.

I agree. I don't really care for term limits much, unless we are doing something crazy like making political positions kind of like jury duty. But I think the job requires experience, learning to write laws and manage a government isn't trivial and some know more about it than others... experience can be a good thing. This idea that you get to be a millionaire from gifts and stocks and free cake? That needs to go. @JessTheUnstill @Nonya_Bidniss

@futurebird Would be nice if politicians had the same anti-bribery rules as civil servants. No new innovations, nothing fancy.Just exactly the same ones.
