The history of data visualization is exciting and I think underemphasized. In the 1850s on this avalanche of data starts to accumulate and not until 1885 did the Royal Statistical Society recognize the need for graphics to parse all the information— As always I wonder about data visualizations that must have existed outside of formal contexts. And both the power and potential for abuse must have been there from the start. Crime statistics were among the first to get official attention.

@futurebird I was gifted the 4-book set from an Edward Tufte seminar on data visualization and it is an absolute treasure. I love the historical examples.

@futurebird I’m sure you know about Ed Tufte’s work — in every user experience talk, there’s a point where ‘we have to bring in Tufte now’

@futurebird DuBois made an amazing book of visualizations in 1900.https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/first-time-together-and-color-book-displays-web-du-bois-visionary-infographics-180970826/

@futurebird One thing few realise is that Florence Nightingale was one of the pioneers of statistics, I believe she invented either the polar area diagram or the pie chart.

@futurebird hmm, does William Smith's 1815 geological map of England, Wales, and a quarter of Scottland count as data visualization?https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/Geological_map_Britain_William_Smith_1815.jpg
