That Ezra Klein audio essay about how Trump is “uninhibited” makes many good points among several baffling points. Mostly, when he’s saying “aren’t there just times when we all wish we could just say what we *really* think?” isn’t very relatable— But I flee circumstances that force me to be dishonest and maybe I’d be a more glamorous and fortunate person if I didn’t do that but I pretty much always say exactly what I think. I guess I should remember many people do not?

I’m terrible at lying, even just to flatter or be polite. I think many people are and you can’t find ways of existing where you can keep such activity to a minimum. So the desire to speak the truth in your heart doesn’t explain Mister Trump to me I get that he’s doing that and it’s not that remarkable. The problem is what he feels in his heart to be “true” is so incomplete and disappointing. He sees so little worth loving in other people and even in the natural world.

Like his whole side tangent about how he can’t comprehend anyone who would try to explain the behavior of sharks— it got lost amid the sheer ignorance and illogical nature of the shark vs. electrocution story. But buried in there was a side tangent about how annoyed he was that someone tried to explain why sharks may or may not bite. This compassion and curiosity disgusted him. Sharks are monsters that bite, the person who suggested more nuances needed to be mocked. Trump is so incurious.

@futurebird leaders and super-rich people always risk ending up like this because it's so easy to fall into a sycophantic bubble without even realizing it. That's one more reason that these newspapers falling for his bullying are making a mistake. Failing to say that the emperor is nude is about as bad as complementing the new clothes.

@futurebird 1/2I disbelieve the popular notion that "speaking from the truth in your heart" is necessarily correlated with being verbally abusive. It's not true, and those who favor it are in most cases projecting their desire to abuse others onto everyone else.

@futurebird After reading the rest of your thread, I thought about this "what we really think" phrase. Maybe it genuinely means "what the seven-year old in us would think if the world was simple and this was a story". The world is after all famously complicated and confusing. For a lot of people the stories we told ourselves when young are where we go for certainty and confidence. That's not usually what I would mean by "what I really think" but it could feel that way.

@futurebird I imagine that with #FeloniousTrump that if he, personally, can't make money out of it, he isn't really interested!

@futurebird I certainly have days at work where I have to hold my tongue or be measured in my response. But to your point, the real issue with Trump isn't that he's uninhibited but that what he has to say is often so disgusting.

@futurebird 2/2Furthermore, it aids and abets the horrid notion that people like trump would somehow be less awful if only they were diplomatic in their pursuit of genocide. It's false, and it's dangerous, and it's the main reason the GOP coupled vance with trump; they know there are people who would oppose trump but who would tolerate vance.

@futurebird Usually when I follow the impulse to "say what I really think" I am then faced with the consequences. People disagreeing and giving me good counterarguments that I didn't think of. I think that's why I keep some thoughts bottled up, because I have learned that the more eager I am to profess an opinion, the more likely I am to embarrass myself. The full fantasy goes "to say what you really think, and to be proven right unconditionally." But that's just what it is, a fantasy.

@futurebird As a teenager, I decided it was easier to be as honest as possible as much of the time as possible. In college, I made a conscious choice to take other people at their word.Communication is about conveying concepts between minds, and we know so little about what's going on in someone else's brain that making it *more* difficult defeats the purpose.I don't have unspoken incoherent reprehensible internal monologues. What does it say about Klein, that he does?

@futurebird Saying and doing whatever you want without considering the affect on the people who hear is, it crass and disgusting. It assumes that only YOUR opinion matters.

@futurebird Trump's disinhibited (not "uninhibited") because he's a 78yo lifelong substance abuser with dementiagot to assume this essayist has had the privilege of never having known a person w/ these issues so IMO he hasn't anything of value to say on thisdisinhibited not uninhibited means--Trump isn't saying what he really thinks *he isn't thinking* he's saying whatever the diseases that ate his brain down to ego-centered infancy scrape together to make speechlike noises

@futurebird I think it's something that can only come from a lifelong lack of responsibility. Most of the times I can think of where I've held back speaking my mind have been times when...ok, once I met a cute woman who did medical billing. Before I had a chance to mention what I did, she went on a long rant about how she felt perfectly justified in upcoding. This is like bragging to a DEA agent about smuggling cocaine, in this context. I literally just had no clue what to say, still don't.

@futurebird Isn't Klein suggesting that, in our most secret hearts, we're all thinking like Trump and wish we were uninhibited enough to say those things? Because no, I don't think those things and I worry about anyone who suggests that I should – they're just telling on themselves, no?
