If you want some help deciding how to stop using Microsoft Windows, there are many people on the #fediverse and #nostr who would be happy to give you advice. I recommend Linux Mint. Also, I refurbished and sell computers with the option of having Linux pre-installed. Can ship anywhere in the United States. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.#Microsoft #Windows #Linux #LinuxMint

@matthew @Dan_Ramos Yes linux mint is a good gateway into linux as it is nearly foolproof. Even apple users can figure it out.

@matthew @Dan_Ramos What are some of the biggest hang-ups that you run into and how do you overcome them? I generally tend to run into a lot of people that are so relying on QuickBooks.

For people and small businesses using QuickBooks, I recommend that they keep using Windows for QuickBooks... but have an additional computer with Linux to use for most everything other than QuickBooks. So for a lot of the people I talk with QuickBooks is an issue, but can be worked around to still get the benefit of avoiding Windows for most things. Probably the biggest objection is from people who are just used to certain Windows applications and want to keep using them, mostly Microsoft Office. In that case, trying out Linux in a Virtual Machine or on another computer is still an option so that they can get used to Linux and what is has to offer while still having the comfort of what they are used to available.Eventually, they may switch to using Linux as their primary operating system. If not, at least they gave it a try.

@matthew After support for my Win10 laptop ends, I'll disconnect it from the internet like my Win7 laptop and keep it to refer back to old applications. Then I will be done with #Windows. I laugh at the occasional notification saying support is ending but my laptop can't upgrade to Win11. Their solution: Buy a new computer!I have an Ubuntu laptop I use from time. I look forward to learning about other #Linux versions. Dell won't let me upgrade to the latest version of Ubuntu.

So true. You can probably do a fresh install of a newer version of Ubuntu on your Dell or just another version of Linux. The main version of Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, so would have many things in common with what you are already used to. Good to hear that you are resisting #Windows11

@tanquist @matthew For people coming from Windows, I highly recommend Linux Mint. I've tried tons of distro over the years but I keep coming back to Linux Mint.
