       It’s like someone explained to him (the author V. Vinge) that nation building never works— and he believed them. But he also kind of missed the central point as to why. (it’s the lack of agency and perspective— provided it isn’t the exploitation— and it’s often just the later)There are millions in his stories but so much hinges on the choices of central players and even a literal prince.
