If everything goes well, at some point in the future I should move to a house. So I am preparing for it in different ways. For example today I am testing out Frigate with motion detection using a Nvidia GPU. And it seems to work, after a lot of digging through the docs

The bad part? The GPU is constantly using 60W, handling just one test stream (my laptop webcam)

Now I want to test if I can Raspberry Pi v3 camera as a stream for Frigate. Being able to use Pi cameras instead of some shady Chinese inventions would be rather cool, I think

Does anyone here use #Frigate in an actual "prod" implementation for their house?

@stfn yes. Does car/person detection on the doorbell camera. Perfect for the occasional "let's put this package here at the front door without pressing the doorbell so it gets wet or gets stolen"-delivery.

@khenderick thanks. So far I only found how to do general motion detection (motion / no motion).

@stfn i am using a USB coral board, which isn’t quite as flexible as a GPU, but only 5 ish watts. It works seamlessly with Frigate. You can make pi-zeros into PoE streaming cameras with these UGREEN Ethernet Adaptors https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N1X28F1

@secretbatcave Thanks! From what I understand, with those adapters you still need to plug the USB to a wall charger, right? I am considering going full PoE

@stfn ah yeah those ones are. I sent the wrong link. I swear I had a PoE version as well.

@stfn https://thepihut.com/products/poe-to-micro-usb-adapter-for-pi-zero-ethernet-power-ieee-802-3af-compliant that’s the one. I have a second hand Dlink Poe “smart” switch that does 24 ports of Poe and all other networking for the house.

@secretbatcave I found something even smaller :) https://botland.store/raspberry-pi-hat-power-supply/20112-poe-ethernet-usb-hub-hat-for-raspberry-pi-zero-waveshare-19635-5904422380229.htmlI am eyeing a PoE switch which I would love to have, the downside is that it is very expensive

@stfn ooo that’s nice! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/226409618026 this isn’t 10 gig, but most poe things aren’t. You’ll need to change the fans for less noisy ones though.

@secretbatcave thanks, I was thinking more along the lines of something like this https://www.servethehome.com/netgear-ms108up-review-8-port-poe-and-poe-2-5gbe-switch/ but what you have is also tempting, I would probably not need 2.5G for typical PoE applications like CCTV cameras or RPis, and the rack mountability is something I would like to have. I still have a lot of time to do research :)

@stfn at (old) work we had core switches for the fast stuff, and cheap PoE for the edge. Having fast and smart PoE switches with enough ports was really expensive! One day I might upgrade to 5 gig, but at the moment I don’t do that much large file transfer….

@secretbatcave why not 10G? I remember watching a Server The Home video, and the host saying something around the lines that 5Gb is rare, and there would not be much cost difference to go straight to 10

@stfn I think it’s because I’m old. To me, 10gig means sfps and either fibre or twinax. But, there has been cat6 10gig for at least 10years. I’m not sure how power hungry they are now, I suspect they are pretty efficient. They used to run super hot when I first saw them.

@secretbatcave I'm actually considering moving to sfps for some of my connections, turns out ready made SFP+ fiber cables are not that expensive
