       Most of the time, that IS actually the accurate reason. One also feels / knows when one screwed up. Whenever I was job hunting, I never got the position/place I wanted most, or the position linked to the first interview. Always took several interviews. Also, seldom had I only one interview in a place. In general 2-3 interviews in a same position until being retained. Keep the good work  up.

       Don't know about the UK but in the States there are government incentives to maintaining open job postings (don't have to pay back pandemic loans IIRC) so the Biden administration can pad their employment stats. Alternatively they may be fishing for a senior dev and junior dev prices.
