@aral I think this just proves that partisan politics is the exact problem we have. Decision making isn't about fixing problems or actually doing what people want, but pursuading and polarizing the populus. Politicians don't care jack about what should be done, and say what is needed to appeal to the largest group of people to win a vote.

@aral Genuine question, please be nice - does the US not have a NOTA or a similar option, where you vote for NOTA when no other candidate seems like a good option to you. And if there are a majority of NOTA votes, the parties are forced to rerun in the elections with new candidates or agenda? That is a common thing in India.

@aral Yes! But what's the 1st move to break the cycle of the lesser of 2 evils? I'd back Ranked Choice Voting. It could be backed by the 2 ruling parties who should be tired of apathy inducing (Clinton '16) or appalling (Trump '24 we hope) candidates throwing elections. People could vote their conscience & make the lesser evil a backup. & it would allow 3rd party & secondary main party candidates to address issues major candidates ignore. Issues important to voters, but not financial backers.

@aral @benfell Voting for a third party candidate will help set a precedent for future elections. If any third party gets even as close to the second place, voters will think: "hey! Maybe we CAN vote our way out of the two-party system!", and members of both parties will think: "uh-oh! Our power isn't granted, and we're in danger of losing it!" Which _could_ pressure them to actually enact some popular policies.
