now on twitter i cannot see the list of people who liked my tweets, but i still get notifications, so it’s not anonymous. to view quotes and reposts, i have to click "view iterations" on the top of tweet, and it’s not as comfy as it was. is musk’s goal to make twitter unusable? well done then?oh, year, and that blocking thing when blocked people can see our posts. obviously it might be a problem for many people.

@meanwombyn Problem was other people went onto your "likes" to police your views. Had nothing to do with you seeing who liked your tweets.

@LostInCalifornia it wasn't a problem. people who don't want to be seen could just make their account private. i'm fine with people seeing my likes and it's good when i can see others bc it helps me know more about interests and views of people i may follow or not follow.musk doesn't care about privacy. if he did, the users I blocked wouldn't be able to see my posts.

@ninafromcanadaeh @meanwombyn He didn't "remove" it. He removed the pretense that people can't see your posts after you've blocked them.Incognito browser, 3rd party apps, 2nd account... Plenty of ways for a stalker to find your posts. And stalking is the one of the few rational "safety" concerns. Too many people interpret "safety" as only people who agree with your POV.I don't agree with Elon on much, and I think his lack of concern about outright lies being spread as truth makes him a bit of a sociopath, but I'm not sure the hysteria about blocking is merited. Blocking can be used as abuse as well as "safety".

@meanwombyn Yes, it was. People were policing "likes" for clicks and giggles. It was, in fact, a major problem.

@LostInCalifornia @meanwombyn @ninafromcanadaeh He basically replaced blocking with muting. This is probably more mature and will toughen up the users.

@amerika @meanwombyn @ninafromcanadaeh more or less. when you mute, the person can still interact, but you don't see it. blocking, they can no longer troll you.

@LostInCalifornia curious how someone can troll you when you can't see them - due to muting. or blocking. always been a bit fuzzy on how it works. I sometimes post followers only here, and I check who follows me when I get the notification. I'm private on Twitter, hardly anyone can see me, even the people that I used to interact with as they are rarely there now! But it's an old account, with mixed associations of people, so I'm leaving it like that. Only use I had for block was to chip someone off as a follower. I'd previously admitted them, but if I blocked, and then unblocked, they were no longer following me, and would have to request again. No-one did! they didn't care I did that.meh.

My question: who or what determines whether something posted to the platform is the actual truth or not?The truth doesn't require words to still be true. Lies, on the other hand...@LostInCalifornia @meanwombyn @ninafromcanadaeh

@phoneboy @meanwombyn @ninafromcanadaeh An actual lie: "McDonald's has confirmed that Kamala never worked at McD's" or FEMA is planning to work with developers to make your sell your house".Just because something suits your political campaign doesn't make it true. An actual lie is an untruth, it's usually obvious, and it shouldn't be up to McDonald's, FEMA or Lysol "don't inhale our product" to tell the liar to STFU. Lying for a political cause means the voters have to decide, and then he'll lie about that too, whether he wins or loses.

What a lie is wasn't my question. My question is WHO (i.e. which party) makes the determination that a given statement is truth or a lie? The obvious followup question: how can we be assured that the named party is being truthful in their analysis that a statement is actually truthful or just the latest propaganda?@LostInCalifornia @meanwombyn @ninafromcanadaeh

@phoneboy @meanwombyn @ninafromcanadaeh Obviously, we don't have an answer for that yet. Mass communication problems have shifted from one type to another, and the solutions will come after trial and error. However since Elon criticized the previous management for removing the persistent liar from their platform (when he was already dead duck), my comment is a little more on point.

The problem has already been solved: it’s you. Only you can determine what is true and what isn’t.Continuing to rely on someone else to do that…or worse DEMAND someone else does it for the “benefit” of others, and you eventually end up with the Ministry of Truth. For proof, see Covid-1984.There’s a reason I run my own Mastodon server.@LostInCalifornia @meanwombyn @ninafromcanadaeh

@phoneboy @LostInCalifornia @meanwombyn @ninafromcanadaeh In the future, I think everyone is going to:(a) run their own server for a series of plug-in functions, of which Mastodong will be one(b) export encrypted backups to other servers in a reciprocal arrangement(c) have complete separation of public identity from internet identityUrbit and Solid are onto something, just probably not the way they're doing it.

@ninafromcanadaeh @phoneboy @meanwombyn Exactly. Twitter allows people to publish without lawyers, media training, or even knowing what the facts are. That's fine, if you could exclude the bad actors, like the ones who deliberately spread false rumors for personal or political gain.
