Decentralized Social-Media (DeSo), including the Fediverse, should move away from Internet domain-names.At most they could be something 'cosmetic' (like the names you assign phone number on your phone). And NOT something that is dependent on.@laurenshof https://indieweb.social/@laurenshof/113272932344551848

@reiver I'm not sure, if I understand you saying "move away from Internet domain-names". How should a #FediVerse server get connected to via a web browser, if not via a domain? @laurenshof

@fasnix @laurenshof Here is one example —In the low-level data, that Fediverse software stores — usually in some sort of database —Currently, a user is represented as something like:@joeblow@example·comIt shouldn't, though. Something that does NOT include an Internet domain-name (i.e., "example·com") should be used. ...

@fasnix @laurenshof One option is the ECDSA key that already represents the user. Behind-the-scenes, Fediverse software already has a (delegated) ECDSA key that represents the user. That could be used. ...Although, if you want to support key-rotations — another option is some type of opaque globally unique ID that maps to whatever the user's ECDSA keys currently areYou would need a resolution technique for it. (It could be WebFinger. Or something else.) But that is trivial to address

@fasnix > How should a fediverse server get connected to via a web browser, if not via a domain? Browsers would still connect to servers via DNS, and servers to each other. But as @reiver suggests, @username would not be tied to a domain name, making accounts portable between servers. There's already work on doing this in ActivityPub, see;https://wedistribute.org/2024/03/activitypub-nomadic-identity/#ActivityPub #PortableAccounts@laurenshof
