WP Engine does not contribute enough to the open source code they're making hundreds of millions of dollars a year on, and it's time for open source to fight back. He should've talked to a lawyer before making statements that WPEngine may call “slanderous”, but the fact he even offered a 300k USD severance package to any employee wanting to leave WordPress.com, because things could get more stressful in the coming time, is wild. What boss does that? It's very nice and thoughtful of the people who work under him. I can't really hate the guy for speaking what we're all thinking.

There are no winners in war. Fireship described both sides as “the petty megalomaniac CEO, who is willing to burn down his entire community to prove a point” (Automattic/Mullenweg) VS. “the parasitic freeloading private equity firm, who's only guiding principle is financial gain” (SilverLake/WPEngine)....and you know what? I can understand wanting to prove a point

@ErikUden anyone who's ever thought about lawyers and lawsuits, ever, has daydreamed about pulling shit like Automattic's "[ ] I am not affiliated with WPEngine" on the login form. You're taking me to court? Then fuck off, you can't be my customer anymore. Everything he's doing is understandable. But he's destroying his reputation and the company with how badly he's reacting to parasites, and seems to be very resistant to friendly voices trying to tell him that.Anger is a cognitohazard and righteous anger isn't any different in that respect.

@tehstu don't worry. It's just that, usually later in the day, I have too much time on my hands to deal with the consequences of my insane statements, hence I have a tendency to make them at this hour.

@risottobias okay, what text did he extort someone with? Maybe I'm too out of the loop on this one. I also thought the severance packages are a good thing — did they include some sort of NDA? I mean, if someone wanted to blow the whistle, wouldn't it be a lot easier when they're out of the company than still working on the inside? Maybe I'm simply too uninformed.

@ErikUden Morally, I can see your point.However, he chose that license knowing that this is allowed, and he's taken an impressively destructive course of action.Besides, what he did is extortion. That ain't right.Also, this assumes you're talking about his recent "pay up or else" shenanigans with WPengine, including locking out contributors and appropriating a plugin written by somebody else, not the transphobic shit with Tumblr, or... wait, exactly what was it he did that wasn't wrong?
