I'm seeing claims that the algorithm on #bluesky is better than the one on #threads. is there a default algo run by BS on there? I've heard you can choose to use one and customize it, but is there one turned on automatically for all new users? we know most won't make that extra effort to change that or even care much about who and how people are trying to manipulate them. Algos are powerful in that they let others control your attention. Bad for democracy. Their presence is tempting to assholes.

@wjmaggos I think the following and the discover feed are on by default, though I haven't created an account in a while. But, anyone who's saying Bluesky's 'algorithm' is better/worse than Threads just decided not to read anything bluesky was saying about the ability to choose any feed when you sign up.

@grubz @tom so there's chrono/following, discover and other public feeds? any idea what determines "discover"? why have "other public feeds" instead of just following somebody or going to their profile and seeing what they boost? or even BS setting up accounts for each of their "other public feeds"? I guess they wouldn't want people on other decentralized services to be able to follow that without using their service :(

@wjmaggos @grubz I have no idea how discover works, I assume it's some form of trending posts feed, I'm not sure how much customization you get on an individual feed- but there are thousands of feeds you can add or you can self host your own feed (there's also a website a 3rd party made where you can drag and drop to create your own style of feed). I'm like 80% sure while you're creating and account it brings you to this page to select some feeds to pin to your homepage

@wjmaggos Kinda sorta. Brand new users get the Discover feed by default, which shows them something, just to get started. Once you follow people you can use the “Following” and “For You" feeds. The former is strictly chronological, no algorithm as such (kinda: replies from others might be shown depending on your settings). For You is based on what your followees interact with.Otherwise, there are lots of custom feeds built by third parties that you can use.
