It's a bit different that most of them because I'm partially basing it off of a swedish emergency ration but I'm having a hard time coming up with a knife to put in it. I was going to put a Mora basic in it but the handle and sheath is too big even though it does fit in the bottle

If you're the type who needs several cups a day, then there's nothing wrong with it. Generally, 3 days is the standard sort of reference to plan a "survival" kit around.

I'm assuming this survival kit is being put somewhere like in your car or something, right? Or otherwise something quick to grab to cover the essentials in an emergency? A decent folder can cover enough ground to get you out of a short term bind, and can help you build for a long term one.

I saw a nifty survival kit that had one of those small ontario knife things, I basically recreated it for $50. I did have @GLObalMARinePR talk me into getting a toor knife though, the jank shank in particular and I'm very happy with it.

Warm drinks like coffee or tea are definitely useful in a "survival kit". I also recommend soup concentrates, e.g. freeze-dried miso soup cubes.

I know right, he was gone for a while and I tagged him about a knife question, popped in and disappeared.

>foldable knifeMy theory of "survival kits" is that there are two types. A small pouch, and a foldable knife is ok in that. This is the "I got caught with my pants down" version. The other is a 3+ day pack. Which is a 3 day pack with solid/upgraded tools that will serve you longer than 3 days if necessary. Big "deluxe" packs don't make sense IMO because you won't be able to carry heavy packs for long periods in an emergency.

Right, so now that i have had time to think about how i want to word this, The essence of a "survival kit" (i'm not going to be a sperg about how the word doesn't really mean anything unless you define it beforehand) regardless of scope is something that has what you need to maximize your chances in getting home. My general thought on it, is that it should be an augment to what you're already carrying. Rather than being what you carry in and of itself. "Survival" (regardless of scenario) starts with what you know, what you're wearing and what's in your pockets when you recognize there's a problem. And then you build up from that with a particular idea in mind. As an example scenario, you take a wrong turn on a trail and you have to stay a night when you didn't plan on it. Wearing good warm clothes, keeping a good sized bottle of water, and having a leatherman+ bic lighter in your pocket is already having about what you need to get home. having a "survival kit" as an augment would be keeping a pouch/bag with some piss water tablets, chemical surefires, and an extra lighter or matches or something. Surviving here, is just staying warm for the night until you turn yourself around in the morning. This also applies upwards if it was something like "my car broke down on a backroad" your car and what's in it is your survival kit, and you just need to wait a couple days. Because generally, you're either found/out of the situation within a week, or you're dead. There are two things that have priority in a short term "survival" situation. Temperature management and hydration. Your clothing is half the battle here. Once you start packing outside that scope, it really stops being a "survival kit" and just turns into what should be your regular kit that you add a situation specific "survival kit" to. For example in what i mean for that, if you're decently equipped for your outing otherwise, the "survival kit" portion is going to be medical supplies. You already have what you need for the outing. And you should have a baseline set of equipment in your pockets or on your belt in case you lose your pack. If you have to stay out longer than you planned, it's not a survival situation, but inconvenient camping. It will however become a survival situation if you get hurt. Ergo, the "survival kit" in this situation is having a cell phone and a (real) means to stop bleeding or what have you until you can hobble out of the woods/get picked up.

As it stands, this textwall doesn't really mean anything without having some experience to know what the seperation between the normal carry component and the emergency component is in a given situation.

@blaaablaaaa @confederatehobo @EllisDee Had trouble getting people to do what I want in leather goods, so Im off learning to do it my damned self. It's going pretty well, if you carefully watch the new products from the made to order boot companies you might see my influence somewhere.

@blaaablaaaa @confederatehobo @EllisDee I told the boss I was there to learn to become his competition, and asked if that was a problem. He likes it. Figures Ill actually pay attention while I work for him, then whatever I start up won't have his history, and might grow the market.
