       It's as if someone tried to engage me, a casual Mets fan, in a detailed discussion of batting averages: I would simply say "No. The Mets are the best, because they are the best." for some politics is a proxy for identity. Who you support is a statement about who you are. Remarkably, Trump engages with politics at this same rather low level... most other politicians are at least aware of the greater complexity. It's why he lies with such ease.

       I once said the Philadelphia Phanatic, their despicable green, "bird" mascot "used that cone on its face to suck out people's souls." And? I meant it! Of course it isn't 'true' it's just part of the fun of baseball & team sports.Not so fun in politics. Games have consequences. Those consequences will reach some of us sooner than others. They will reach even his jolly fans who think this a lark pulling one over on those sourpuss liberals who seem so preachy and serious.

       @futurebird Yes. To him, truth or lies are irrelevant, in that the message serves a different purpose.A lot of people point out that, in a technical sense, that makes what he's doing bullshit. Not intentional lies exactly, even when he knows he's lying. Just statements where he doesn't care whether he's telling the truth.

       @futurebird People need to take politics seriously, like fire prevention, nutrition, exercise, PPE, indoor air quality, queueing properly, returning the cart after shopping and I think I understand that this is a fundamental problem which won't get solved easily.
