Positive reinforcement works a lot better even excluding the cruelty angle tbh, miscommunications happen a lot and if you start hurting them then they can easily develop other disorders. So many poop eating dogs do it to try and hide their shit before they get hurt/their noses rubbed in it or whatever, and undoing that response is a lot harder than just occasionally giving them a treat for shitting on a walk etc.

The main thing is consistency, almost every dog (even the dumb ones) will try and work out "How did I get that treat, I want another one" as long as you pick a high enough quality reward.

Then they aren't doing it right, if you have to use violence to raise something like a domestic animal or child then you should not be allowed to be responsible for them in the first place. There are very few cases (bait/fighting dogs, and even most of them can turn around with some compassion) that cannot be solved with consistent and obvious communication through positive reinforcement.

Dogs are higher risk than kids, kid bites someone they get a minor punishment whereas a dog can get killed for it etc. You have to establish and hold boundaries, but that doesn't require cruelty unless cruelty is all the dog's ever known (and they don't understand/react well to positivity anymore).9/10 if a person's smarter than their pet, they won't ever need to punish them. Just distract and redirect, it's very easy for non sadists to do tbh.
